I recently visited my mother in law who lives in a lovelly village near Lincoln. We struggled to find a site which was close by. In the end we found a farmers field which had a water tap and waste facility only. We arrived friday afternoon and left monday afternoon, we have always hooked up. By monday just before we hitched up the battery indicator was showing amber. The point I am trying to eventually reach is after hooking up to the car and driving back to Lichfield (80+ miles) the car did not charge the battery back up. Can someone tell me if this is normal.

Is the fridge working when the car is hooked up?We had a problem with our Terrano when we changed vans. The cable was hot after a while and eventually melted the middle of the connector on the car.The wiring has changed slightly on newer vans and we found that the Charging earth wire and the Fridge earth wire must not be wired together on the car. When i checked my wiring both the earths were together so i seperated them and have had no trouble since

Thank for your reply Andy and Lynda, I have had the electrics checked on the car and is working fine. When I drove back home I switched the fridge off to maximise my charging. Someone told me that the car only trickle charges the battery in the caravan.

I wonder if there is something wrong with your battery? The reason I ask is that we used our van without EHU this summer for the first time - lights, radio and water pump - and the indicator was still very much in the green after a full eight days.
Have you tried to charge it from the mains at home?

We had a similar problem on our old van and it turned out that the charging unit wasn't working properly which in turn had ruined the battery. After having a new charging unit and battery fitted we were back to being able to go a full week without EHU and no problems. I would have your charging unit checked before spending money on a new battey as if there is a problem with a charger you will just damage the new battery too.
Well mike142sl sometimes one has to cast his net out quite far to get catch the fish. Doghouse 1 I was quite happy with how long the battery lasted because my wife likes her TV and we used an inverter. Its just the fact that the vans battery was not charged when I towed the van back home.

If you car could travel at the speed of light and you switched your lights on what would happen.??? You'd be able to see where you've come from if it was dark . Got any other easy questions , LOL .
Imagine you have the battery at home and it's showing amber , you connect up a battery charger and charge the battery , how long does it take to fully recharge ? 4 - 6 hours maybe . Travelling 80miles at say 40mph , 2 hours charging time probably isn't enough to recharge the battery .
( above is said in a nice way , but every time I read it , it reads like it's got a bit of attitude , but don't know how to make it read different, sorry ) .
