I'm about to do this as I previously used  a non alko compatible towball (lotsof creaking)- it wasdry but not extended type. I've now gotcorrect type fitted.

I'm rubbing(Pads) these down with 100 sand paper-Yes?.For how long do I do this? Can I over do it?

Is the application of meths on completion as good as brake cleaner?

The creaking may have been due to the bottom face of the stabiliser rubbing on the standard towball.  There would not be any significant difference in towball dia (they are made to close tolerances), so if the friction pads are not contaminated they should not need cleaning.  The only thing I would check is that no damage has occurred to the pads.  This would be a very slight vertical offset of the stabiliser due to it fouling the towball body.  If the pads are not visually damaged, it may be better to let them rebed on the new towball, as you are not likely to be able to rectify any minute distortion of their spherical profiles by hand-sanding them.
