Hello again
has anyone got any tips on keeping caravan smell free over the winter? I have 2 of the rechargeable de-humidifiers, but not sure wether or not i need to leave seats up and cupboards open? I'm sure i've seen something about this before.
Thanks
It is best if the air can circulate, so prop cushions up and leave cupboards open.
Make sure you empty the de-humidifiers regularly as the moisture they contain is very corrosive - don't spill it. I've tried these and didn't find they make much difference anyway - no caravan is airtight and they sinply draw in more moisture from outside.

You dont need any sort of dehumidifier or bags of silca gel in a caravan. A caravan is not sealed so all the dehumidifier does is dry the air coming in which is just folowed by more damp air. what is important is to make sure there is little as possible to retain damp, so yes leave seat cushions standing on their edges & cupboards open. Its ok to leave curtains up but dont leave any clothes & certainly not towels in the caravan.

we just use our caravan all year round, even if its only for a weekend it will keep it from building up damp etc.we were away last wkend ans are off again this weekend.the sites are lovely this time of year,so quiet and you can pick a prefered pitch.we just pitched right next to the fishing lake on our last holiday.it was great.wouldnt have had this pleasure during peak season.go on take your pride and joy out, thats whats its there for.all the best.
had a phone call today to say my awning adjustments are complete.so gonna have to go away next week to test it before we go to west runton on the 24th of october.this year its gonna be used till next year then the same again.
i use a dehumidifier and it does work, stand cushions on end.place three bowls of salt on the floor.not on a polished surface though.more....... Winterising Your Caravan
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
thanks for all your replies. Would love to use it all year round but the next 4 months are very busy in our work and usually Fridays and Mondays are out of the question. February is our next planned trip.
I also used ice-cream tubs with salt in them previously, very effective, & cheap, but now I have a newer van and I will be using it over the winter season, but will still use the salt idea when not in use.
