I reckon your best bet is to get another door and frame from a scrapyard and cut the door from top to bottom, down the middle and use the second door to patch in a bit.
Plain aluminium panels on the outside and plywood panels on the inside, will hide any internal joints and the extra lengths from the second doorfame, will give you the now wider top and bottom frame parts.
A Fiamma door lock will help you and your son in and out as well as give the extra wide door its own security.
I am not disabled and therefore I have to think about the problems that you may or may not have but I am fairly certain that there will be people in this group who have come across the problems that you are now facing and have solved them.
