Now, another two variables have come into the equation: [1] what about members who don't have a credit card? and [2] the procedure of resting grass pitches to allow them to recover.
I the first instance, yes, there will possibly be those without credit cards (very few I would imagine) and secondly, the resting of pitches is an entirely different subject to the "no show" question. You may just as well include the possibility of someone having to be turned away because a family due to leave has had a vehicle breakdown!
There are now three factions in the discussion: Those who favour deposits, those who are against deposits, and those who appear ready to throw every single excuse into the argument, just to defeat a viable debate. Also, as the club now operates a credit card facility, I would imagine, if the club really found it necessary to go to a deposit regime, then maybe the club would advise such members to get a credit card in order to use the booking facility. And that observation alone is likely to set the hare running in yet another direction. Round-and-round-and-round!!!

What about the members without a credit card?
You do not even need a credit card as such now, most shops are selling a credit card type facility which you can add money to over the counter (Pay Point) You just give the shop keeper the cash he puts the money on the card and you can use that on line or in another shop just like a Debit/Credit Card I think after the original set up which I think is about a tenner it cost around 50p every time you use it. Would that not be worth it if it gets you your pitch.

Just some other ideas.... don't lynch me ... not sure if good idea or not
but an interesting system of booking could be a number of pitches unbookable until a month before departure on the more popular sites. I realise the club would not want to risk losing money. Perhaps they should monitor how often people cancel rather than carry throught with the booking and write to them if they misuse the system.
Perhaps they could limit the number of bookings that a person can make without prior payment...
I work at a GP surgery and we do write to people that miss more than two appointments in a year without a good reason... I wonder if the caravan club do the same sort of thing to no shows?
I suppose whatever system you use disadvantages somebody.....
