Yes, we tried ours the first year with the status left on, but with the spike removed and the movement from the wind rubbed a hole in it even though the cover was made to go over the status.
If its your first cover then be very careful with any and every sharp area / corner. Buy some water pipe lagging, split it in half and tape it over all the sharp edges and the cover will last for future seasons.
We taped ours on with duck tape which left a sticky film come spring time but its soon removed with Tee cut.
