Hi everyone.

Last year we decided to upgrade to a folding camper from a tent and we purchase the Blue butane gas bottles, this was fine when we used the camper through the warmer months. We have now gone the full hog and puchased a new caravan so that we can use it  through the winter months also.

I have noticed from other topics on the message boards that using propane gas is the best gas to use through the colder months, due to the butane freezing up.

Can i return my empty blue butane gas bottle in exchange for the propane bottle.

Peter

It seems its up to your dealer.

We changed from butane to propane this year.

The first dealer refused the second dealer said 'no problem'

Guess who will be getting my business from now on?

When we changed from our tent to a caravan we took our butane bottles to GoOutdoors and changed them to propane with no problems at all. We have since changed these to Calorlite and this now means we can carry 2 bottles in our front locker instead of 1 and 1 in he car.

Hi, Calor Gas will exchange the Blue Butane bottles for the Red propane for no extra charge (apart from the Gas price) and so should a Calor dealer is my understanding. As for using the Blue Butane over winter, the gas will light and burn but it will not burn as hot and as well as it does in the summer hence why switching to propane is recommended. The propane seems more expensive as there is less in bottle hence price per kilo is more. Calor Gas Lite is a good option and it also has a gauge on the bottle. One other thing to consider - changing from Blue to Red will require a new regulator - approx £10.00 each.

if changing from blue to red bottle you need to change the pipe too if its is black,to orange.the black pipe only last 12 month the orange 5 years.

Whilst I feel that it is prudent to use the red hose , whatever gas you use, I know of no reason that "you need to change" from using black hose.
Why do you say this?

The black is fit for purpose if its within its designed life just the same as the reinforced orange hose is.
The Caravan Club recommend changing at two yearly intervals, they don't give any longer concession if using "orange" hose.
My understanding is that the "orange" is able to withstand higher pressures.
Either should not be used more than 5 years after manufacture.
If I am wrong I am happy to learn on this important safety issue.
John

the orange hose is a high pressure hose and the black is low pressure.if unsure ask here.i was told by a caravan engineer some time ago.gary may know why.

www.calor.co.uk

LPG hose - 4.8mm

LPG hose - 4.8mm

  • 4.8mm propane
  • High pressure trelleborg hose
  • 1 meter

Firstly, Calor have assured me that any Calor dealer will exchange any Calor bottle for any other type or size of Calor bottle without quibble and they would like to be told of any dealers who refuse.

Secondly, the gas system on a caravan is low pressure so black hose is fine - it doesn't matter whether you use propane or butane. High pressure hose is only needed for some freestanding appliances that run at high pressure, e.g. some Cadacs and other gas barbies and fires..
