Our problem is that the gas heater has stopped working on our abbey 516 GTS! It has been working fine right up till last week. The missis uses the caravan regular as an office to get away from me and the kids, so the heater has been used alot in the last few weeks, what with our lovely climate! She went to it last night and it wouldnt light. It is a carver fire with an automatic igniter, when you turn the knob to ignition position you normally get the constant ticking and the red light on the knob lights up untill it lights, but now nothing! The caravan is hooked up to the mains all the time, and the battery kept topped up. I have had the front off the fire and there is a box wher the control knob goes in, there are two connectors on this box one of which has 12v the other to the light on the knob, thats as far as I have gone. Any ideas?
You need to check 12v is getting to it, first check the plug and if it's there it could be dirty connection pins on the pcb. What happens is a 'scab', for want of a better word, on one or both the pin lifts the connection and prevents a circuit.
Sometimes just pulling off and on a few times can cure it or you need to remove the box and clean the contact pins.
Two 8mm nuts hold the bracket and to makes things really difficult, the rear one also has the extra earth lead attached. Trick is to use a 'greased' 1/4 drive 8mm socket to remove the nuts without losing them. To put back put both nuts in the socket to get rear one started and then put the front nut back on.
If all this don't work then it will be a more serious pcb fault, I have serviced exchange units if required.
As a general warning, do not attempt to light the fire through the flame viewing hole!
I have checked, and there is 12volts to the little box (i presume that this is the pcb). Will this mean that there are no disposable battery needed in this model or could there be any inside box? Dont know exact model, just says carver on the heater. The caravan is a 1998 Abbey 516 gts model if that helps. Will check in the morning if there is any bad connection in the plug or pins.
Yes it's just a pcb (printed circuit board) inside, no room for batteries, the fire will be a 3600, or the 2000/4000/5500 series fire with a slide switch on top.
All these and the 3000S/A before use the same ignition module run off the caravan battery
Sounds like you know your stuff Gary!!! I have had the front off and had a closer look. The label says 3600 stc auto, and the year is 1997. I have got good voltage at the plug (presuming from the leasure battery). Will take the pcb off and have a better look. How much are the pcb's if I need one, might have to wait till next year as I have just been made redundant!
Thread revival, I have a 3000s auto in my abi jubilee courier, the fire does not light, the blowers work off the 12v battery but the fire will not even click/tick when trying to light the fire, what would I need to replace? could it be a blown fuse? if so what rating would the fuse be?
I have not got a separate battery, I have started a new thread http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=31&TopicID=340948&PagePosition=1&ThreadPage=1&get=last#4612375
I have attached photos of the inside of my fire, hopefully someone will be able to advise.
