Our van is currently on a Winter pitch at Brighouse Bay in Scotland

I noticed last weekend that the roof of the caravan is starting to be stained Green, presumably from the trees that overhang the van. Does this actually do the caravan any harm ?

We are looking to clean this off but we need to take the awning down to do this.

Hi,

It won't harm the van, but if the awning becomes stained as well the green algae will be a bu**er to get off.

Our first van had a "all season" awning with it that the owner had left up for six or seven months and then bundled up without cleaning.

Although it was made of modern materials, water staining and algae marks were impossible to remove.

So, I would give your awning a clean, if not the van.

cheers

Mr UM

How did you get stains off your awning? Ours got very dirty in France this summer from under trees, the roof and the sides of the annex but when we read the cleaning instructions it advised only to use water or brush off when dry. I think the 'dirt' was dust washed off the trees during rain. Needless to say this didn't work. It was the first time the annex had been up and it came down after a week and was filthy!

Hi,

The awning was a Dorema All Season and it was quite literally green when we got it. (It should have been blue)

To begin with we used Fabsil Universal Cleaner which worked well and removed 95% of the gunge.

I then attacked local areas  with a tooth brush and a more concentrated solution, which again improved the situation a bit.

When Mrs UM was not looking I had a further go with Jif mixed with a bit of Milton and then well rinsed.

This did get all but the last traces of it off. I then re-sealed the awning with a proprietary spray.

Please however do not follow my example with the Jif and Milton, as I am reckless and foolhardy and generally a very poor role model when it comes to fabric care.

Mr UM
