Hi,

Whilst away in the caravan last week the 12v system stopped working and I am looking for some advice on getting it sorted.

Over a period of a couple of days everything that is 12v slowly stopped working (lights, water pump, extractor fan etc).  I have checked the status of the battery and it is still fully charged which seems to suggest that it is not the charger at fault?  I am thinking it may be an earth fault but am not really sure where to start with identifying the problem.

Any help that anyone could give with either supplying a potential solution for the problem or any other ideas on identifying the fault if it looks as though I am wrong would be gratefully received.

I will potentially get an electrician to look at it but would like to have an idea of what the problem is before parting with cash if it is just a "loose wire".

Many thanks in anticipation

When you say "everything that is 12v slowly stopped working" what exactly do you mean?  Did they pack in one by one or what?

They started running slower and slower (lights getting dimmer and dimmer etc) until there wasn't enough power to run anything - as though the battery had discharged; but like i said above the battery is showing is fullly charged (and I have tried a spare battery which I know is fine).

As you suggest, I'd trace the neutral from the battery back to earth and remake the connection

tykey thanks for the response, now for the silly question -- any idea where the earth is likely to be?

I'd trace the neutral from the battery back to earth and remake the connection

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the "negative" lead from the battery will not be earthed to the chasis.it will connected to the control panel in the same way as the "positive".

if the gradual failure of the internal apparatus is not due to a flat battery then the most likley cause will be a bad connection, probably getting warmer and warmer as you use the power and so causing the lights e.t,c. to get dimmer and dimmer.

to trace the fault, start at the battery and check both positive and negative leads, and trace them into the van and through to the control panel. you may come across a loose or burning wire.if you can't find any thing you need to start with a voltmeter.

post again if you need further help

it could still be the battery at fault,if your meter is reading 12v its only half charged.needs to at least 12.7 volts.
