your car can legally to 1800kgs so in theory you could have quite a big caravan... but it would be best to stick with something with a max weight of 1300-1500kgs as it would be a better match for your car.

We have a Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 Estate,

According to stressed Als post 1800kg is what the car can pull, not what it can pull legally which is 1518kg making it 100% of the car.

Our Volvo 940 estate weighs in at 1536kg although the owners manual says that it can tow 2000kg, legally we are governed by the 100% rule although would go with 85% for safety.

I thought here wasnt actually a law on tow weights just safety guidelines? Stick to the 85% rule or if you are very experienced you can tow up to 100%.most people adhere to these guidelines though.

1500 kg is quite a big van. Our Pageant is 1400 kg max and is 18' long.

If you have not towed much in the way of heavy trailers before i would stick to the 85% rule. If you want a big heavy van, get a big heavy car. If you opt for diesel it will probably use less fuel than the mondeo, and if you go for 4WD you will be much less likely to get stuck in a muddy field. Choice time - 0-60 in 9 seconds or safe towcar for a big caravan! Very few affordable cars can do both with ease. My choice is the 4wd because it keeps my family safe when i am towing. 0-60 fast is fun but towing safe is far more important to me

We're happy to go with the 85% rule, we're not thinking of getting anything huge or heavy.

I understand what you mean about the 4wd v's the 0-60 doit, but tbh we got our car mainly because of it's size, not the engine and how fast it goes and tbh it don't go that fast it's a heavy old beast.   We're campers so needed a good car with space and some power to carry all our gear, which is a awful lot, which it gave us.   We can't afford a new car right now, but we have got money together for a tidy caravan.  Hubby has pulled trailers etc, but never a caravan, hence his experienced mate is going to take him out with it a few times before we go anywhere!!!

Thanks for all your posts their very much appriciated, thanks to you guys we've found a secure registered storage site locally which we didn't know about, insurance companies and had loads of tips.

So for now we continue our hunt for a caravan within our limits for price, weight, length and what we want (5 berth), :)

Choosing a caravan to match your current car will mean fitting it to these criteria in this order i recon...
1. Price (if it is too expensive it is pointless looking at it)
2. Weight (if it is too heavy to tow it is pointless looking at it)
3. Layout (if it does not suit you it is pointless looking at it)

Decide on 1. Work out 2. Look at loads of vans to discover 3. Once that is done you can experience 4 (enjoying yourself!!).
