Why oh why do people have to go and buy ever bigger caravans giving themselves and other road users problems to surmount. I believe that the max length should be reduced to 5.00m, this would I hope stop people saying that they have to have a 4x4 to tow it. My wife and I have a 3.5m caravan and last season towed with a clio1.2 with no problems, we have just changed our car for a 1.4 Scenic, and that is as big as we want to get. The grandchildren then fit in the awning, which is heated by the caravan heating blown air, we have hot and cold and shower so all the comforts. So we are regularily camping with 5 persons as they love coming away with us.

Plese give consideration to other road users and the impact it has on the road system when buying a new caravan, as they say bigger is not always better.

if this had been the case when we first started we wouldn't of been able to my son  was only 12 months old and I was 6 months pregnant  with the youngest no way would we have put a baby and 4 year old in the awning alone anything could of happened to them it only takes a second if it came to limited space the adults should be in the awning and the children in the caravan were they are safe even now  at 14 I wouldn't let him sleep there as he has severe learning difficulties and would wander off everyones circumstances are different one size doesn't fit all

Now that's just plain silly - it's like saying that everyone should live in a one bedroomed house simply because it's possible!

I am not giving myself or anybody else any problems by buying a large van, so i've had to change the car for a 4x4, so what i would have changed it next year anyway. and i 'd like to know just what problems you think that i'm going to cause other road users to surmount?

I'm going to be towing with a 2.5ltr turbo diesel that is easily capable of towing at the national speed limit, I am an HGV driver with 20yrs experiance so a 4x4 with a 26ft van behind it is going to cause me no problems what so ever!!! I think your statment has a wiff of jealousy about it.

We have a 26' van and a 4x4, OH is an experienced tower and I am not aware that we cause any problems either. I think those who DO cause problems are usually towing a too heavy van with an underpowered car, or exceeding the speed limit.

i have a serious question!!! who was the dealer that sold you that caravan doing knowing that your car was a mondeo, even with the size of motor in it the car isnt going to have much power left to move it is it, i would seriously question anything else that they have told you on that basis alone as they clearly dont have your safety in mind do they? and you say you had just collected the van and took it to the storage and got stuck EMPTY, so without you changing you car the only hope you have of getting it back out the storage, was to pray for dry weather, thats not my idea of caravanning at all! we bought ours to use all year round, so, can i make a suggestion and serisouly will you think about any of the other claims they have told you to get you to sign up for your purchase.

just remember your in a better position than most first timers, many others will believe what ever they are told by these so called experts and when it all goes tits up who gets the blame?

Hi Tentmad,

When we were ordering the van I did question wether or not the Mondeo would be up to the job and they said because it was a 3ltr it would have no problems, and to be fair on the road its not a problem. although I did think the weights were a bit too close for comfort and I wasn't really one hundred percent happy, so when we got stuck straight away that just really made up my mind to change to a 4x4 anyway.

I think the dealer is like anyone else in this current fianancal situation, trying to make money. If he had said I would have to change my car to tow such a big van, would I have still bought it??

well if the doubt was in your mind then why did you go ahead and buy something on the basis of what a sales man said? that is pure stupidity in my book, in the nicest way possible!!

its fine saying that your going to buy a 4 x 4 but its the salesman that has put you in that postion in the first place, what if you couldnt have afforded to buy one?

I posted earlier on this thread that we also changed our towcar from a mondeo eastate when we recently bought a 620-6.  Ours was the 2 litre diesel and there wasn't a problem with the power, it was just as bluesriff said - the weights were on the limit.  An experienced caravanner can tow up to 100% if they want to.  The 85% rule is just a guideline not the law but we were concerned that if there was more than a breath of wind it would not be stable enough.  As regards the post re 4x4s, as I only travel a mile to work, the 4x4 is now my car and my hubby has kept the mondeo for his commute.  Apart from just having a weekend away with the new van (brill!) the 4x4 has not been used over the christmas break.  When using it for towing, we prob get the same mpg as the mondeo.

I know what your saying Tentmad, but like i said this is our 1st ever van and I guess we were a bit nieve. We all learn by our mistakes and I will certainly learn by this one!!! At least I get a car that can cope with most conditions out of it!
