Hi all

I have just joined this site ,so here is my first question .

Where do you all go in your caravans in the winter ,I have always been a fair weather caravanner, but see caravans all the time from November to March ,so give me some idea of what you do and where you go.

                       Thanks in advance Teejay

Where do you all go in your caravans in the winter

FWIW, I spent a week in the Lake District just before Xmas.  Mind you, that was mainly because we wanted to keep out of the way of the decorator at home.

Some nights it was -5degC - and the water in the Aquaroll and pump froze.  The roads were very icy most of the time - and it snowed heavily one night.  The roads around Thirlmere were "interesting" to say the least.

Next time we go away in that kind of weather, we'll have to think a bit more about how to winterize the water system.

Cheers
Andrew

We used to go winter caravanning but now we are retired we can only afford to go 2 or 3 times a year and it seems more sensible to spend that time and money in th summer.  However we had some good trips in the winter with a couple of exceptions.  You need to ensue that the water system is suitably lagged, we used an old coat and you've got the right gas (red cannisters).  The worst thing of course is the weather if it's cold and wet then youre better off at home, we found that sitting in the caravan on a dark winters evening at 4 in the afternoon fairly depressing especially as we got older preffering to be tucked up at home with the fire on.

I love winter caravanning, there is nothing nicer imo than curling up (after I have prepared, made a meal and washed up, grrr (but OH makes breakfast)), and watching tv whilst the wind is howling/rain or snow is falling/ice is forming (delete as appropriate) outside and watching tv with a glass or three of something.

The blown warm air in modern vans works very well too - so there's no need to be uncomfortable.  In our Burstner, though, we can use a 6kg cylinder in about 3 days (despite the higher levels of insulation) - so the next time I go away in winter, I think we'll be taking a 13kg cylinder as well.

The biggest problem we had was the water pump freezing up.  One obvious solution is to bring the Aquaroll and pump inside overnight.  Has anyone found a solution that would work for a week of subzero temperatures - maybe pipe insulation?

Cheers
Andrew

Yeah I agree, there is always something to do at home (cleaning)whilst you can just chill in the van, crisp winter days are the best and getting out with the dog for a walk is great its nice and cosy in the van when the wind is howling outside!! Trying out country pubs etc I love it all year round.

We spent christmas at glenmore near aveimore it got down to -14 one night, we where toasty in the van. The only problem we encountered that night was OH forgot to empty the waterhog and it froze solid, he wasn;t to happy trying to defrost it. We had a thermal bag with a water pump cover for the fresh water but we still needed to add pipe insulation to it during the day and we founf we had to bring it in at night. (the pump that is).

The only other thing I would add is- don't take a camping gas heater for the awning as we did, we forgot that is froze quicker than propane. We had propane for the van though, and if it does freeze don't take the bottle in the van because in our case the valve on the bottle froze open and it was only for me hearing a hissing noise that we didn't all blow up!!

But enjoy winter caravanning, it is great especially with the family.

Sorry 4 the essay
Gina
