I'm not sure I know what you mean. I'd rather have that stuff working at 80mph than take a chance on nothing preventing deflation.

I mean if it repairs itself while you are on the move, you don't know about it. Therefore you are travelling on a temporary repair you are not aware of.

Now that really sounds scary.

Bertie.

Very many years ago, prior to buying a franchise to market a smilar product, we asked the AA to check it out due to the heavy investment.  They carried out in depth testing and the end result was that we decided against purchasing the franchise due to a number of safety issues.  As it happened someone who did opurchase the franchise did end up in court being sued but unfortunately we had left and never knew the outcome.

Having said all the above, I do carry a tin in my vehicle which I will only use if the tyre deflates unexpectedly and then only to get me to a fitter and only if my spare wheel is deflated or damaged for some unknown reason.  One of the reasons why we have Green Flag.  I would never consider putting it into my tyre as a matter of course and it cost us a few thousand to the AA technical department to come to that conclusion.

Wow, it goes on despite Simons instruction to end !!!

For your info 80 mph is perfectly lawful if
a: you have lawful dispensation to do that speed and your circumstances dictate that to be approriate
b:even easier your on the continent
or c: even realistic enough to note the average speed on a middling sort of day on parts of our networks.

Interestingly I don't think anyone will be able to point out where I said it was better than a spare BUT I have said that under a number of circumstances ,on balance of risk, its better than nothing. Some people seem to be talking about the re-inflation stuff in a can, this aint it.

But we trundle on:

A simple question to all the doubters.

What would you rather have:

1: A puncture you dont know is happening developing and a so called "blow out" occuring. Actually usually the tyre subject to catastrophic deflation and leaving the rim but the effect is the same.

or

2: a puncture occurring and the enhanced possibility that your tyre will not suffer the situation in 1 above.

Bit of a no brainer really when it does do what it says on the tin does not harm your tyre and the tyre (if within parameters) can be repaired subject to fitters attitude.

Yes and I have personal experience of it and info from a large fleet to support the claims made.

You are absolutely correct and trading standards would have a field day if the claims could not be substantiated or endorsed.

humble appologies Dave, I saw your name in a post referring to 80mph and should have checked back to see the original poster who mentioned speeding, although I must admit they did not specify a country but a natural assumption is that they wer in the UK as this is the ukcampsite forum. (-; Least said etc!.

Absolutely no need for humble apologies. I just didnt want to be labelled as a brainless speedster. Theres too many anyway without me putting my big foot into that one too

On the subject of spare tyres and speed it horrifies me when I see people driving "normally" at speed on those space savers.

Overtaken when I was doing 70 a week back by a youth in his 58 Astra coupe with a space saver on the front n/s

Yes, the AA carried out the tests at our request for which we paid a lot of money as they do not do it for free.  I should add that the request was made by myself and a few others who were also interested in the franchise for their area, but it still costs us thousands each.

I never stated that it was the same product only a product very similar which had similar properties and was extremely effective at sealing punctures but wasa not a re-inflation product.  The one that I currently have in my vehicle is and is not linked to the franchise we were going to purchase.

The major downside was that in some cases one would not know that a puncture had occurred and would carrying on driving resulting in a possible blow out at a higher speed and possibly fatalities!  The other reason was balancing of tyres as this was a mobile glue inside the tyre and on initial start up and for the first few miles a vibration would be detected.  This could cause the tyre to wear faster than normal.

We all know that very few people check their vehicles on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis so having gunk in the tyre permanently is not a good idea.  It may work with a fleet if the vehicles are checked on a regular basis.  I certainly would not have gunk in my tyre permanently although I would carry an inflator with me.  If gunk in the tyre is so brilliant why don't manufacturers put it in as standard when they supply the vehicle.  I would thinik it is because they want to avoid a law suit!

As far as I am concerned, pumping gunge into a tyre, reinflating it and then driving normally, is a real "wing and a prayer" situation.  Nobody can tell how good (or bad) is the quality of the "repair".

If you had dangerous fumes issuing from your CH boiler, and a gas fitter came and switched the boiler off and back on again then, without even removing the casing, told you it was OK, who you accept that?  Because that is what using the gunge amounts to.

Bertie.

two reasons i do not use it.not knowing about the puncture and balance.many moons ago i worked in a garage and if you could see what a badly unbalanced tyre could do on a machine its scary.

michael.  All I am reading at the moment are ever increasing reasons why the government should have put in place regulations to make a full sized spare wheel an absolute condition for cars to be sold in the UK.

Having said that, the welfare of people in other countries is just as important, so the requirement should be global.

Bertie.

There are other countries who already have this as law Bertie, Australia being one of them, perhaps with good reason, not much fun getting a puncture in the outback with no spare and and only gunge to get you home safely at a limited speed and having to stop and let the tyres cool down regularly.

Anyone going abroad should remember to check the laws of the road for their intended destination if taking your own vehicle, in some cases you could land up with a very hefty fine or imprisonment.

No worries Dave.

Obviously the youth in the Astra had not read the instruction which is often printed onto the wheel as well as in the handbook. Coming back from Edinburgh yesterday I was overtaken by a car(4x4) and a very large caravan on the M8,I was doing 70 and estimated that the unit was doing between 80 and 90, he certainly did not take long in becoming a dot in the horizon.
I think the main problem with speeders is that they believe that if their vehicle is capable of doing these speeds then it is safe to do so, unfortunately forgetting that the greater the speed the less chance of stopping safely or maintaining contact with the tarmac becomes. Spent the first few years of my working life cleaning up the carnage on the M6 caused by these careless people, sadly all too often ending with innocents paying the price. (rant over lol)

Correct re people failing to maintain but you definitely cannot tar all of us with the same brush. Far from it.
If someone is that slack they quite are quite possibly negligent in other areas of car upkeep be it lack of insurance or an engine that's about to fail at 70mph plus in lane 2 or 3. Its never their fault but you perhaps may be surprised just how often one thing leads into another.

No one has evidenced a reason why its dangerous or useless.

It's dangerous because the driver isn't aware that a puncture has occurred and that this stuff has re-sealed the hole temporarily. It may be highly visible day glo green or pink, but if that part of the tyre is at the bottom when the driver next checks their tyres they will not see it. They could then assume all was well with the tyre and drive around for another week (assuming that they do check their tyres at least once a week) -  so could be covering high mileages at motorway speeds on a tyre that hasn't been properly repaired and could fail at any time.
