Hi all...I have a 1990 ABI ACE Diplomat, which i bought about 6 years ago as a 'repairable'. It had had a knock in the rear which had broken the shower tray. I fixed in a new tray and although we have only used the van once a year, it has served well. The front window cracked and has now let in water so is probably not worth fixing.

So, with an expanding family, I'm now after a 4 berth. I don't want to spend much more than 1k, and have been looking maybe at something like an ABI Globetrotter, or Swift Corniche. I don't have experience with other makes of caravan, so was seeking some 'general advice' on what makes/models to avoid and which are better.

My main criteria is that it is as light as possible, and not likely to fall apart at speed!

Regards...Colin...

We had an ABI ace jubilee globetrotter built 1988/89, My parents had it from brand new and we had it til 2007, Served us very well, the only thing you really have to be careful of is damp, it had damp at the front at the top side on the right, and at the rear (but that was when OH reversed it into a wall and we thought it would be ok so didn't repair it) despite the other damp being repaired it seemed to creep slowly in in places. so be wary, but I suppose the same goes for all vans that age,
Overall was a great caravan, fairly light so a family sized car or mini MPV should drag it no problem,
The only other things that ever went wrong with it was the corner steady broke, but thats wear and tear.

Well, once, when i was on my own on a clear straight road with no-one watching, i clocked 94mph with my little caravan. Anti-snake device fitted of course!

Obviously, i wouldn't condone this sort of behaviour....

And of course, i won't do it again!

I'm very glad to hear it!

As a Lunar owner, I can agree that they are good vans and also very light.  Ours is a 5 berth and weighs 1230kgs.

Have a look on ebay, they usaully have some for sale.

Good luck.
