It is very difficult to be sure about your own speed, let alone somebody else's.
I drove my wife's car to Birmingham yesterday,so I transferred my Tomtom to her car for the journey, I set off at a steady 70mph according to the speedo when i checked the speed on the Tomtom it registered 63mph, In my own car the difference is 2mph. Now whether either reading is accurate is debatable, but the fact remains that 70 mph in her car is considerably slower than 70mph in mine.

Just changing the tyres can alter the mph, i.e. larger tyres would have an effect of under reading I think.

I read that TT will be true to within 0.5mph whereas the tolerance for speedo's is <10% OVER, they are not designed to read under. As your tyres wear down then technically the speedo will read higher still due to the (often un noticeable) reduction in wheel diameter. My Vectra shows about 66 when the TT reads 70, I rarely use the TT now but when I do I use that as the true speed reading.

Checking speed vs speedo is easy in France. On the autoroute, set cruise control and count km posts with a stop watch, the posts are numbered every 100m decimal 1, 2 ,3 etc. The more kms covered at fixed speed, the more accurate the calc. Possible in France when there is no other traffic in sight. Usually shows speedo reads 5 to 8 % high depending on vehicle.
Never found a stretch of road in UK to keep constant speed for long enough to matter. Usually concentrate on driving to suit conditions, both in front, and behind.

in engineering school was always taught that a speedometer was celebrated at plus and minus 5% error.that is many many years ago they are possibly more accurate now.i approached a sign yesterday that gives your speed, sign said 27 when i looked it was 30 on the speedometer.

We get more concerned about the amount of caravans that are obviously not packed correctly and the noses are right down. They must be so hard to tow!!Because we drive a minibus we are able to pack more in that-we only put clothing in the car-but its obvious that some people just chuck everything down the front end and hope for the best!!

As I posted previously - it's illegal for a speedo to under-read (ie, show you are travelling more slowly than you really are) but not illegal to over-read, therefore they are deliberately set to over-read in order to protect the manufacturer (not the driver!) from prosecution.

I wonder how long it takes to stop safely in an emergency if you're towing a van at 80mph?
Coming back from Kent on the M25 we did a full-on emergency stop in the middle lane when a car jack-knifed a right-angle in front of us, in front of the lorry we were overtaking and ran up the bank.
Even within the speed limit, with a powerful car and very small van we were lucky not to have overturned, it is tempting to swerve in those conditions but we just had a bit of a wobble. How the lorry didn't hit the car I don't know. They were very very lucky.
You won't always get home quicker doing 80mph, one day you might not get there at all! Perhaps it's best to stick to the speed limit - it's not the speed, it's the stopping that's the problem!

Hi
This post has generated a lot of intrest as i thought it would but what surprises me is most people seem to be talking about the speedo and assume it was wrong now im not going to get in to argument about it but if your towing a caravan and your overtaking a few cars then i think you would know your speeding even if not doing 80 and if his speedo was saying 60 then i better get mine fixed lol.
