now you see i find this hard. I dont let my nearly 9yr old old out my site buy in just over 2 years he will have to take him to and from school on his own and that worries me, and would like to be able to let him go off on his own a bit and was thinking campsits would be a good place but now i am not sure its such a good idea.

Of course it's a good idea to give them freedom on a campsite! If your child is well behaved and has been warned of certain dangers in a kind and calm way which I'm sure your child has, then camping is a secure and sociable place to be for a nine year old - he'll love it. children grow up and develop amazing skills while on holiday and I think campsites are the ideal places for it. It's like having a big garden of your own where there are lots of other children to meet and play with!

no kids primary teacher

i think you have it right you need peace of mind a 30 min check in good idea but they may get stuck in and forget

walkie talkie excellent fun idea 'we are .......over' mobile phone between them good too

caravan sites seem to be the last in freedom and safety long may it continue.

i dont like to be near a playpark as i am getting away from kids but NEVER have a prob. with them being anywhere on site they are socialising and its good forthem. i think its funny they hang round the loos WHY O WHY???

I appreciate parent like you that keep tabs and not sit getting bevvied and leavin kids out way too late.

i would think they should be in just after dark for safety issues (tripping over guy ropes for one) and to keep you on good faith with others.

enjoy yourselves kids these holidays are for you too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We give our kids walkie talkies too.

Camping seems to be the only place where our kids can have the FREEDOM we had when we were younger.

They have their rules but ( I hope I don't get shouted at for this ) kids do get very excited when they're camping and can get very LOUD, and I would hope that IF my kids did over step the rules and be a nuisance to fellow campers I would not be offended if they told them off or to quieten down.  I feel that if kids are doing wrong then they should be told in a polite manner, or am I too old to expect that this is possible nowadays?

I have found this thread really interesting.  We only came to caravanning because we had a child, & to be honest, it is the cheapest way for her (& us) to see this wonderful country, & europe.

I completely agree with those who have 'issue' with the parents who let their children run riot whilst they get bevvied up in their tent / van - that, as far as I'm concerned, is irresponsible, & as far as I'm aware, they could, technically, be prosecuted, along the lines of 'being under the influence whilst in charge of a minor', depending on the age of the child (there are legal precedents to this - not a lawyer, but a healthcare trainer!!)

The idea that those without children should choose pitches away from the play areas is right, also, if you don't want the 'hassle' of children on site, then there are a growing number of 'adult only' sites out there - try those.

I love the idea of walkie talkies - will have to invest in one -  but got a few years to go yet - she's only 9 months old, yet, because we have a baby - who, incidentally, sleeps through the night -  we still feel we should get a pitch fairly close to the play area, so that if she does wake in the night & disturb fellow guests, at least they will understand - hell, at least we're indoctrinating her to the ways of the caravan fraternity early!!.

We used to camp under canvas, & we had a terrible time on one particularly lovely site - the mother & her partner were smoking 'waccy baccy' (she even had the front to tell the lady in the shop this when she went to buy some more roll-up papers as theirs got soaked in a water fight), the kids ran amok around the site, tripped over our guy lines & damaged the tent (& others) & then on the saturday night, the police had to be called because the mothers partner gave her a beating - lovely behaviour on a holiday site - in fairness, after complaints from the other guests, they were asked to leave, but the police had to be called to do that too - so glad am a C&CC member now!!!

Parents have the responsibility to make sure their children behave, yet have the freedom they don't necessarily get at home - it is a fine balance & I will do my utmost to ensure our daughter respects everyone elses holiday time.

Bringing up baby to be a seasoned caravanner - we bought one to holiday cheaply - working well so far - & caravanners are lovely - helped us on our virgin voyage & our awning!!!

Our 2 girls are 5 and 8 and we do use the walkie talkies to keep in touch although it does depend on the site, how far we are away from the play area and how busy it is. I always want to know were they are and what they are doing not only for safety but to make sure they are not making a nuisance of themselves! We feel, like a lot of other campers, that kids can have more freedom on site than anywhere else.
I'm a firm believer that kids need to be respectful of others and to be aware of the effect of their actions on other people not only on campsites but in everyday life. I quite often find myself say to the girls "how would you feel?". I think that is what is missing with a lot of kids today.

Walkie Talkies, great idea. I'll be adding those to the packing list.

I bring my 8 year old in at dusk because I have friends whose child was relieved of their cash outside the loo blocks.

The site we stay at has security but I think they're seen as pretty harmless. There are good visits and bad, if theres too much trouble we take Gabs to the Amusements and she happily spends her 2p's until bedtime.

My kids are 10 & 8  Take their bikes or scooters.  Use walkie Talkies and mobile phones. Both kids have phones but on different networks so hopefully at least one of them will work. They always make lots of friends, and if the weather is bad either invite the other kids to our awning to watch a DVD or play games, or go to one of the other 'vans.   They have to let us know where the new friends are parked and I normally go and say hello to their folks. Usually the bikes are parked (?? or thrown down) outside the caravan where they are playing, so then you know where they are.
