...id love to know who came up with the ridiculas idea that caravnning is cheap??? im hearing so much in the press that its the ideal recession beating way to go on holiday, crikey i wish!! in the three years we've caravanned we've got to have spent pushing 30k inc van in insurance, site fees must have extras, it is in no way a cheap way to holiday!!! could have spent 4 weeks a year in the bahamas for that!! but you know what i wouldnt have it any other way!! and everything for the van seems so expensive this year,

like a pair of numpties we never drained the system over christmas and the freeze cracked the plastic thread on the tap £50 blooming quid its just cost for a new tap!!! 50 quid!!! lesson learnt though!!! but then while we were in the shop had to have one of those massive moon chairs and a pair rechargable dehumidfiers!! £ 120 later!!

carravanning cheap my blooming a#%e!!!!

Doesn't have to be £30k.  We paid less than £3k for our 1997 van including everything in it and a full awning and come the end of this season we won't have spent more than £7k including 2 seasons on a seasonal pitch.

We've spent our holidays there plus lots of weekends, Easter and Bank holidays etc so for us it has been a sensible purchase.

Edited to say that is over a 3 1/2 year period.

even when we had a small van it was still a lot!

my point is even at 7k its still not a cheap way to holiday in the way the press are making it out to be, there are a lot of hidden costs that when some new vanners start they may not realize, which in my opinion can put a few more dangerous vans on the road, as things like servicing, new tyres, gas safety etc which all cost extra may get put on the wayside, there are people out there who may see press reports think oo lets get a caravan and think its as easy and cheap as that, when its not

ranting coz of how much the tap cost me today aswell!

We never pay more than £400 for our fortnight holiday in August for five of us on a site with good facilities, thats a lot cheaper than if  I took my lot abroad.

site fees are a lot cheaper, thats why we bought a van in the first place because a site in cornwall wanted nearly a grand for ten days in a static in school hols and wewere like crikey we could get a caravan for that so thats where it all started for us,

i worked out inc fuel, insurance, servicing, extras, van storage, cost of van, awning, gas,etc

Our last static caravan holiday in august was 1, 300 in Cornwall for  a family of 2 adults and 2 children. After that holiday, we looked into touring vans and brought one the following year.

30K for 4 weeks in the bahamas ?? and your complaining about UK prices, most people dont earn that in two years, yet still love this way of holidaying.

the beauty of having a caravan is you can make it a cheap holiday or a expensive holiday, you stay at 4 0r 5 star sites for about 25.. pounds a night or you can stay on a small farm sit e somewhere for about 6pounds a night, you can eat out at a flash joint for about £20..pounds a head, or do it yourself for a few pounds each, thats why we enjoy our caravan the holidays are what we make them.

Have a heart. Camping/caravanning is still  cheaper than most alternatives, by comparison. After your outlay, you have your adventure, go home, and you still have your camping equipment. If you go on our type of hol purely on the grounds of cost, you may not get the enjoyment. It has increased in fees over the last few years, but so have the other costs  of flight, travel and accommodation. I think it is still good value for most folks.

We asarted cheap with a £700 van and worked our way up, the amount of weekends and full weeks just taking off is great and our now £6k van and all the accessories was worth every penny. If I couldnt afford it anymore Id just go in the campervan or even the tent if I had to sell both outfits!
