The seasonal pitches on our site are all concrete based for the caravan and gravel for the awnings. We have our awning up all season - from March to end of October. We put down: layer of waterproof groundsheeting - and bring it well up into the awning, so when it rains the water goes underneath it. Then we have an old breathable carpet-type ground sheet on top of that. Then we have our new groundsheet which is the woven carpety-type soft material. And to finish it off we bought some rugs from B&Q sale for £5 each and they just fit nicely in the space and they make it snug and warm.
A lot of the pitches do have pallets - some have them on the gravel and have to climb up to get into the awning - not recommended when you have hip and knee problems like I have. A lot of them have dug out the awning pitch and put the pallets level with the awning. On the face of it it seems like a better idea, but I did notice that with all the heavy rain last year the water table had risen and the awning space under the pallets was inches deep in water for a long time.
