Hi,anyone care to enlighten this caravan newbie on the correct procedure for unhitching,you know the one that does nt involve pulled muscles,head scratching and rowing with the mrs,all advice greatly appreciated,

Do not forget the breakaway cable and electric cables.

Hard enough trying to move the van without trying to pull the car as well.

Remove the Cables and Breakaway wire.

Depends on the hitch type.

Non stabilised coupling,
Lower the jockey wheel & tighten the clamp. Then begin winding the wheel down until you see the car lift very very slightly, Then raise the hitch handle and keep winding until it releases from the ball. If the car starts to raise more than normal height either rock the van slightly or take the handbrake off the car. This usually does the trick.
If on a slope put the handbrake on until your are ready, You do not want it running away.

Things i always forget it that breakaway cable. Forget to fit it or remove it. If you have grease on the towball fit the cover as soon as you get the van off. Getting the grease out of your clothes is a pain.

Stabilised hitch similar but you need to raise the lever 1st.

I think thats it realy?

Another tip is

If you reverse on to a pitch, pull forward 6 inches to remove the compression on the brake system.

Put the caravan brake on before unhitching, it can be embarrassing to have to run after it!

Also hard work stopping it!

We have found that you may have to push down on the car bumper a little as the suspension rises with the hitch when you wind up the jockey wheel.

Oh if you have the stabiliser hitch ( Al ko) make sure it is lifted up fully or it makes unhitching difficult. Can be a problem on some 4 x 4s with the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate as clearance is tight.

Some hitches have a button on the side to hold in whilst you release the hitch, others have a bit underneath the handle that has to be held in. Some have to be lifted up first and then forward. A good wiggle sometimes helps.

I always push n shove my caravan into position with my car, before unhitching.  Couple of wedges under the caravan wheels, then lift my caravan off the car tow ball by winching the caravan tow hitch clear. Move my car, level the van. I stopped all that physical stuff a long time aga. T hurts. By this time, the tea is usuall made by OH.

Not really sure whether you have a particular problem or just need reassurance. If the latter, make yourself a checklist for hitching and unhitching - print it out on your computer and, if possible, get it laminated. After three or four times, you'll probably never need to look at it again, but it's helpful for reminding you about things like breakaway cables.

There's general advice on coupling here. For uncoupling, do the reverse - but also remember to ensure the caravan isn't going to roll away once it's unhitched, so handbrake on and, if necessary, chock the wheels. Also, remember that if you're pitching the caravan, it's a good idea to get it level before unhitching...
