Been a tenter for a few years now but this year thinking of moving to a caravan.  So another caravan novice to begging to be educated!

I have seen a Bailey Pageant (5 berth) van at a dealers, the price is £8,500, plus £500 on the road.  It comes with nothing extra, so will need to buy a leisure battery, gas bottles etc.

I have seen other private sale van Elids Firestorm (5 berth), round the same year for less that comes with awning, leisure battery, motor mover and bits and bobs, water carrier etc.

If I go with the dealer there is a 2 year warranty with the van, but I will then be into buying the leisure battery, awning, water carrier etc.

The following questions apply, and I know “decent” is a relative term…

Which do people prefer and why, the Bailey Pagean or the Eldis Firestorm?

How mush is a decent leisure battery?

How much is a decent awning?

How much is a decent motor mover?

Should I go with the dealer and get these things as extras or go with a private sale where these things are included, it seems less hassle to do it privately, unless it all goes wrong.  But then it could all go wrong with a dealer as well.

My head is in bits looking on ebay, looking around at dealers and posts.

Help!

We have just bought a Caravan after being tenters for a few years.

I went looking at either the new bailey or a second hand Caravan, (after initially going for some tent spares). Was not impressed with the Bailey, fittings were not that good, but it looked nice. The second hand market is very expensive IMO.
In the end we bought a new Sprite Major 5, as part of the deal we got them to throw in a Battery (£60) Aquaroll(£45) and Wastehog (45).

Regarding the awning they range from £300 to £2000 depending on what you want to spend. We got a 2 year old Isabella with carbon polls for £600, which is a bargain as it looks like it has only been used once.

I cannot answer the mover question for you though.

Personlly I am glad I have gone the new route as that way you have got a full manufacturers warranty.

At the moment buying a new van is a good option. Dealers are finding it hard to sell and are willing to give good deals if you haggle. I bought my new Swift Charisma 555 for £12000 and they threw in all the extras (awning, water carrier, battery etc) FOC. They also switched my motor mover from my old van for nothing.

For us we wanted to get the best (newest!) caravan for our budget and that meant buying privately.  We picked up an 03 Avondale (after the company went into administration) for what most dealers would've charged double for.  We've just found a couple of damp spots (spotted early luckily) and so obviously have no warranty to fall back on but we're not put off by the task of putting these things right with the help of this forum. As alan126 says make sure you buy from a good dealer for a good warranty.  Some folks on here have commented that they paid extra to buy from a dealer and the warranty was only really useful as loo roll....  There are plus and minus points either way.  Definitely agree with the comments to haggle with dealers for the extras though.  Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Went to look at the Elddis today, and it comes with all the gear to get you going, awning, barrel, waste thingy, gas bottle, elecric leads, awning, and a motor mover.

Nipping clean van.

We are getting so much more private thand through dealer.

Think we have about made mind up.

When we moved from canvas to tin tops we initially looked at 2nd hand vans, but the potential for buying a van with damp problems put my wife off. Plus the fact that there was little price difference from late model 2nd hand and new.

We ended up buying a brand new Bailey Ranger including a power touch motor mover and spare wheel for £10,200 on the road. New vans come with a 25mtr hook up cable and step so all we needed extra was an awning we bought 2nd hand (Tuscany awning for £150 and almost new), a new water and waste carriers £80 the pair and a gas bottle was £17.

We are so pleased with the van, and don't regret a thing. Plus we get the full Bailey warranty!

Wouldnt go private unless you know vans well and know what to look for. You have some comeback with a dealer and this can be worth a lot of money if some goes wrong.

Batteries, water hogs and stuff can be bought cheap and as people say, NO dealer will let you walk away without at least £250 to spend in the leisure shop. For what you are paying tell them straight you will go elsewhere if they dont throw at least a hog, waste container, EHU cable (pence to dealers) and a 85a battery. Trust me, they wont let you go.

As for awnings, I hate full awnings - they ruin my holiday putting them up/down. You can get one when you have the money, or get a nice £150 porch job - dead handy.

DONT go private, if in any doubt look up some of the stories here - just type in 'ebay' on the search and read some of the horror stories. Only when you are confident vanners and have any eye for faults and know what goes wrong should you be confident of buying private. Although damp is not as bad or terrible as it sounds, many spots can be repaired easily - other faults such as floor /wall delamination can be very expensive and that is where the warranty comes in handy. For that money an extra £1000 will be worth it when going to a dealer.

With the money you are spending you are almost into a brand new ranger series - speak again to the dealers and ring around - 08 models are going cheap and have to go. Good luck.
