I have bought my Baileys Ranger Series 5 from new in July 2006. My in laws are mechanics and builders so anything that goes wrong with the caravan would be done by them this includes the servicing.
Found a hairline crack in the top rear panel. spoke to the dealer where I purchased the caravan. they contacted Baileys only to be told because it was not serviced by their agreed service centres the warranty is void.
I do not want their warranty what I want is for them to put a known fault right.

I ask for your help in this matter. How? just by telling me if you have had a crack panels so I can build my case.
There are a lot of people that have said they have had a crack panel so hopefully I can collate all these. This will allow me to put a case forward with the trading standards and the courts.
Caravan age, dealer, where the crack was and as much information that you could give would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance

I would say the crack was caused by flexing of the caravan whilst driving due to the basic structure being too flimsy, unless you have been levelling it with the corner steadies(I hope not)

I do know with cars, due to an EU ruling you can have them serviced by a non main dealer without voiding the warranty, I would check to see if this applies to caravans as well.

I would speak to trading standards, but its a grey area as you have to prove the caravan aint 'fit for purpose' but with a caravan nearly 3yrs old you may have a fight on your hands. the only thing to do is keep the pressure on with both the dealer & Baileys & show them you wont go away.

Good luck.

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh, but part of the reason for buying a new caravan is for the warranty. And its printed clearly that the van MUST be serviced annually by a Bailey service agent in order for the warranty to be valid.

By failing to have it properly serviced, and I choose those words specifically, you have failed to comply with the warranty conditions.

With regards to car servicing, even though it doesn't have to be a dealer garage, it still MUST be a reputable garage using genuine or better than genuine parts, AND be serviced to the exact same level.

Personally I prefer to use a dealer, that way I know any recalls or service amendments are carried out as well.

However, I am not saying that this cracked panel is NOT a Bailey factory fault, but you have given them the "get out claus"!!!!

There are lots of other postings on here about cracked Bailey panels (and on other caravan forums too).  If you use the 'search button' at the top of the page and put in 'Bailey crack' then you'll find previous ones.

Check out the 'repairs, service and maintenance' section too.

Info here re warranty, Charlichoo is quite correct that they specify who the approved centres are and that it must be done annually with a 6 week window on the dates in order to preserve the warranty.

Thompson Plastics also state that “the panel should be free of fitting stress”, “distortion will increase stress in the moulding and could result in visible surface fractures over time.” and “Resistance to any given chemical substance is conditional on the products being installed in a stress free condition.” Extremely important considerations as stress could cause visible surface fractures to appear.

Thompson Plastics commissioned   Independent testing which proved that “the material (Fenwick’s Caravan Cleaner) is not deleterious to capped ABS in the relaxed condition So if there was any misunderstanding that Fenwick’s Caravan Cleaner could void the warranty of a correctly manufactured and fitted part, then they are sadly mistaken.

Hello Oldmrfenwick, not sure where your products come into the equation here because the original poster hasn't mentioned cleaning the van with anything specific, just that he has cracks?  There is another thread running relating to your products but as far as I can see this one isn't.

Hi chip

I have just brought a 2007 bailey wyoming.

We put a deposit down on it after seeing it in february we hadnt been back to see it till yesterday (so the wife could measure up some containers in the cupboards) the sales fella told us it hadnt been valeted yet we looked in side then went to the rear end bathroom to find a load of plastic bits all over the place when i questioned the sales fella he told me on the inspection they do before releasing the van they found a 2 hairline cracks in the roof and bailey replaced the whole rear panel,he was told there was a faulty batch that had been fitted to the vans, but as i had only just brought mine and it was still in the compound ready to be despatched to me bailey would replace it.we are due to pick it up on the end of march,if we hadnt of gone over there and spotted all the bits in the bathroom would the salesman have told me??????

Hope this helps chips and good luck.

Nah I think in this situation Bailey won't honour the warranty because the services have been carried out elsewhere invalidating it.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I agree with hindsight I should have had the caravan serviced at a Baileys approved centre since this would have saved me all this mess. The reason why I have posted this is because I do not feel a service on a caravan would stop a crack and a crack should not appear if the panel was fitted correctly.
That is my point how does a service matter to a known faulty component being correctly replaced. If it was a car it would be recalled - They do not ask for service history etc just get on with replacing a fault.
Please do keep this post going since it will let Baileys know it is being discussed. It will let other caravan owners ensure they get their caravan serviced if within warranty and lastly it would help those with a second hand caravan who have found a crack since I do not think this is a warranty issue but a design / fitting fault that needs to be put right.
Maybe it might bring up a legal duty as with the 'Sales of Goods Act' where it states goods must be of a satisfactory quailty and fit for purpose a time line is given so we the buyers can safely buy a product knowing it expected life span.
For a caravan 2 years is not a justified life span since once you have a crack it need to be repaired correctly

Chips94 that is your other avenue perhaps, trading standards/CAB etc for advice as to where you stand under the Sales of Goods Act?

Good luck.

Sorry to sound negative but i am sure as you have had the van serviced else where you have invalidadted the warrenty. I know it all sounds hard and harsh. Sorry, i have done this with a car in the past and did not have a leg to stand on....

Thanks Snowy747 this is the avenue I am taking.

Canvasquivers my point is not on the warrenty being void but in there being a fault in the manufacture that is known and should be put right.

If servicing it at an approved service centre would have stopped it then if you look at the forum for cracked panels on Bailey caravan you will find it well documented in fact Baileys themselves have said it is a batch that had this problem. It also shows that these cracks appear even after the second service.

Thompson Plastics even say if not fitted correctly these fractures occur. Thats bad workmanship

But you are right is saying the warrenty is void I just hope common sense wins the day with Baileys. What I need is to collate the evidence to put a case forward.
