We have just taken charge of a couple of dogs, a labrador and a smaller jack russel cross. they normally travel in their "mum's" Zafira, which is well suited to the needs of the dogs, but for caravanning the tow car has to be Dad's Mercedes saloon with leather seats!
Obviously I do have some concerns about claws on the back seat in the lovely leather, and wondered if anyone else has had this problem and found a solution?
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
Regards,
SL

Our terrier has to sit on my knee whilst we are travelling in my husbands precious jag. It means I have awful bruises on my legs, but, hey, the jag seats still look great.
We bought a doggy car seat cover from Pets at Home - it fastens onto the headrests so it doesn't slip down. It's quite heavy duty fabric, and seems to do the trick for us.

I have a merc with leather seats and my dogs have never so much as put a scratch on them. In fact because they are leather the footprints wipe off easily!
I think the leather they use is pretty durable
If you are concerned just put a blanket on the back seat
------------- always try to be the person your dog already thinks you are
The leather seats in our car have stood up to our dog far better than cloth ones would. He sleeps on our leather settees too with no problems, all the snot and slaver wipes of easily.
hi weve had 2 of those hammock type ones and they have not been very good (not cheap ones either)did not know if it was wi having a boxer and a red setter in them.we now just put their blankets on back seat and they are happy.got to say thou that leather seats are slippy for dogs
Before we got the Discovery and the dogs (now 15 year old Lab / Collie cross and 7 year old Jack Russell Terrier), the big guy used to like to travel in the footwell behind the passenger seat.
The JRT, however, has the standard issue Napoleon complex so feels he must be above everyone and liked to sit on the knee of whoever was in the passenger seat!
Now they're both happy in the boot but that's obviously not an option for a saloon car.
If you're going for the simplest solution of blankets, might I suggest a non-slip mat first - that way neither blanket nor dog should slide too far going round corners or roundabouts. Living in a new town, we know all about dogs and roundabouts!!

Obvious answer, Get a travel crate & put on back seat on in back of estate car, much safer for everyone, including dogs.
Agreed! That's one reason I have an estate car!
I can't imagine allowing dogs on any seats, I certainly don't allow it in the house, car or caravan. It's a matter of training (for the dog and owner!).

Dogs loose in a car? Definitely a no-no for many reasons. If you can't fit a travel crate in the back then cover the seats with a non slip mat and a blanket, and get proper harnesses to secure the dogs. In the event of an accident a loose dog will become a speeding missile, and the consequences don't bear thinking about. Could you live with that?

What does a Labrador weigh? 4-5Stone? Would you have an unrestrained child in the back of car? A harness for each dog and a couple of blankets tucked well in around the seat should prevent any damage. We have an estate and a cage, doesn't stop the car smelling of dog though!
We have a GSD who travels in the back of our car, however, the interesting thing is that when I am taking her out for a run in the car she goes bonkers when I turn on the indicators as she obviously thinks she's arrived and is getting out for her run, yet when the big white box is on the back she just lies down and goes to sleep as she seems to know it will be a couple of hours before we stop to let her out.
