The nose weight for my Sportage is 75kg. I checked the van today and it is bang on 75kg with the front locker containing 2 gas cylinders, my hook up reel, blocks of wood for the steadies and spare tyre. Is this ok to tow at the max or do I need to lighten the front? What do the rest of you do? Used to have a freelander with a bigger nose weight so didnt worry before.
Thanks

Was the rest of the van fully loaded? To take an accurate nose weight reading the van needs to be loaded as it would if you were going away on holiday for for the weekend. Clearly adding things inside the van will also have an impact on noseweight as well. As to your question, my view would be to achieve a noseweight, for the Sportage,  that was as near to the  75kgs as possible without going over it.

I try to get as near as possible to the car defined nose-weight.  Nut I only weigh  when fully packed.   I think you're pretty lucky to get 75kg with all that gear in the front - I only carry one gas and the spare is underneath in a carrier and just about manage 75-80KG.

Hi

We use to have an "equal set up" i.e. car 75kg and van 75kg but i never went to the max as it was just that - a maximum and if anything shifts in transit then you could go over the limit for your set up.

I would personally go for something like 70-72kg, I would take out the hook up reel and check it again.

If i was towing without the family (sometimes went to local sites to set up first) then i would add the weight to the car to ensure correct or better ratio (85% rule)

Hope this helps

Andy

Thanks david. When van was loaded as if ready to go for a week it was 89kg. My awning goes in the wardrobe over the axle and normally I would have had the ground sheet bag, folding table and folding wardrobe on the floor at the front of the van. took the ground sheet etc out but left awning in and got the 75kg. When we go just for a weekend we leave awning etc at home but use the lot when we go for longer. Have to put them in the car from now on I think.

Also what is the "recommended" nose weight for the van?, 7% of my van weight is around 85Kg so I try to get mine as close as to the 75Kg for the car as possible. If you van is lighter you may well be able to travel below 75Kg.

Ideally, you should aim to have a noseweight that is 7% of the fully laden weight of your van - but often the limit of your towcar is lower than that. In which case, apply the lower weight.

Thanks for all that guys. Was talking to OH and saying to put the reel in the car or take out 1 of the gas cylinders as its only the weekend. Silly question why go as near to nose weight as possible?

If your nose weight is too low you may suffer instability.
