looking at selling our 2003 6 berth Pennine Pathfinder and get a caravan, trouble is we dont lnow whether to go for a 5 berth or 6 berth. Most of the 6 berth have fixed bunks at back with another 2 bunks on side which turn into 2 single seats with table. Where as the 5 berth have either the 'L' shaped or twin seats at back which turns into a double and a single bunk above. We have 3 kids aged 17, 14 and 12 and they dont mind sharing the beds etc. I know the 6 berth are generally a couple of feet longer but is there much difference in storage etc.
I have a 5 berth but would get a 6 berth with 3 kids, you can get them with triple bunks and single at the back which also doubles up as their own area. You will get a bit more room, we only have2 kids that come with us and so just share the back double.

You might find that the fixed bunks are a bit of a squash for your teenagers. Also check the weight limit for using the top bunk! When we were looking, most of the fixed bunks were very small. Our girls and 15 and 13 and would struggle to fit into some of the bunks. Our Adria's bunks and wider and longer than most and the top bunk has a weight limit of 70kg! So its worth checking.
As said, you'll probably find your teenagers getting too big for the bunks - my boys preferred to sleep outside in their own pup tent when they were about 11! They'd happily shared a 'room' in our trailer tent, and the bunk beds in the caravan for the first year, but after that said there was not enough room. I would canvas opinion from them first, and show them the models you're interested in, before you lay out a lot of money on a van which may only have minimum use - and if they agree then go for a layout which suits you and which may have a longer 'shelf-life'. You may then save enough money to buy some quick-erect pup tents and keep everyone happy!
Have a look at some of the Adria models (they have a website) - which are just a bit different in layout.
depends on your budget i guess we have the 550-6 bailey ok but as you mentioned 2 bunks etc but they do th i believe 540-6 which has 3 bunks at the rear of the van so they can be left up and kids out of way etc...
We got our caravan last year and i wanted the one that gives the most versatility. We have an Avondale Leda Malvern which has a double bed at the front near the door and at the back 2 long bench seats which convert to bunks. Its about 22ft long so storage is not great for a 6 berth caravan but we manage. The thing i miss most is a wider drawer in the kitchen for keeping bits and bobs in.
All our clothes fit in the wardrobe and end bedroom drawers and all the kitchen stuff will fit in the cupboards though i leave some stuff in boxes in the awning if we are using that.
We can take the kids friends with us and already ds likes to sleep in an inner tent in the awning so its very practical, though we could have got away with a 5 berth.
Just think about how you will use your caravan and buy the one that gives the most flexibility...
The other option with certain twin dinette 5 berths are for the 2 elder kids to use the front bed as 2 singles, mum & dad in the rear double and youngest in the bunk over.
I wouldn't recommend a 6 berth with the age of your kids.
I've just upgraded my four berth and looked at both 5 and 6 berth options.
I wanted a flexible layout, sometimes there are only three of us, me and 2 kids (3 and 13), other times I have two 13 year olds, and occasionally my parents come with us too.
The 13 year old finds the bunk beds a bit narrow, he likes to spread himself out lol. In the end I've chosen a 5 berth, two double beds and a bunk over the back.
It seemed to offer the most options for different sleeping arrangements, and the addition of an awning & annexe gives even more options.
If I were you I'd take all the children to a local dealer and get them to try the different bunk options to see which they like the best.
we have an adria 542uk,which fits our 3 kids now 15,14 and 8 although the middle one uses a pup tent mostly but its good to know that if the weather is bad he can fit in the van.
We have a Elddis Burmuda 6 berth.
Plenty of room for 4 of us (the main reason we bought it).
Most of the time only me,my OH and young lad use it (seasonal pitch). The caravan has a seating area converting into two singles or double at one end and potentially 4 singles (2 bunks) which can be 2 singles at the other end. The young lad likes to be on top bunk, giving him a toy storage area on the bottom bunk, and a sitting area opposite. Ideal for a young lad of 10.
HI WHY DONT YOU HAVE A AWNING MY KIDS ALWAYS WANTED TO SLEEP IN OURS THE DOUBLE AIRBEDS THAT YOU CAN GET NOW ARE BRILL IF THAT A PROBLEM WE BOUGHT A VAN WITH TO LARGE DOUBLE BEDS TO PUT UP ONE AT FRONT AND ONE AT BACK WHICH WERE TWO ROOMS REALLY DURING THE DAY WITH A BUNK OVER BACK BED IT WAS A CRUSADER SIROCCO AND WAS BRILL HOPE THIS IS OF HELP
When we were looking to change our 5 birth Eldis Tornado, we found most fixed births would be a bit small.
As our kids were growing rapidly and we wanted to caravan without an awning, we eventually found our Geist which suits us and the bunks seam a bit bigger than normal - depends on size and weight of kids as there is a weight restriction on top bunk. We also like having fixed bunks, as when on site we use to leave up the bunks on the five births to save the hassle of messing around making up beds at night.
