Been away from this site for a while but now back after deciding to purchase a Caravan (still keeping hold of the tent though!!)

Being new to Caravanning I need to get some driver training and looking for the tried and tested route. Need some guidance please.

Thanks

Martin

The Caravan Club and The Camping & Caravanning Club both run short 1 or 2 day courses on towing, or you could find a driving school locally that does B + E training.

Thanks guy's, logged onto to the Caravan Club website and although they offer good 1-2 day courses the locations are not suitable so opted to purchase a towing DVD! not sure if this will help but thought it could provide some advice on best practice??

If you passed your test after January 1997 you will need to take the B+E test as the category is not on your licence. Pain in the a**e but i think its a good thing if it reduces accidents and improves the standard of driving. To do the B+E you are examined to LGV standard.

Cheers Griff

I don't know if you're licence covers you to tow a van but, assuming it does, I'd take the caravan to a local trading estate or empty car park on a weekend & have a play. Set yourself up a few obstacles & just practise.

Aternative would be, go to a local HGV driving school & ask if you can use the ground where they carry out their off road practise. Most of them have an area set aside & laid out with cones for their pupils to carry out reversing etc & they may well allow you to use it. They may well need you to book time there & may also charge you but it'll be worth it. You'll soon get the feel of your outfit gain confidence through practise.

All I advise you to do is, take your time on journeys with your caravan & don't let the clever ones out there intimidate you into driving outside your own comfort zone. Get there safe & enjoy your caravan.

Only if you plan to tow a combination with a train weight over 3,500 Kgs.
