First time out is great.. you will do daft things, we all have but it will be part of the fun. You never forget your first trip out. If you have an awning remember that is part of the caravan club rule book to have massive argument with the other half. I quote :

2.1.34 - All members must, upon erecting any type of awning or equivalent, proceed to argue and generally act aggressively to the partner, spouse or significant other until such awning is completely erected.

When it was our first time out, we spoke to a lot of caravanners on site, once they knew we were new they offered us lots of help and the wardens will offer help if asked, the warden helped us pitch on site, and I can't speak highly enough of the wardens at the Canterbury site, they helped us with putting in the toilet chemicals and flush, and he said to ask if we wanted any help, they towed us off the pitch when leaving, and others offered to help with putting up the awning, as it was we left the awning, as the weather wasn't very good anyway.

Take the paracetamol, as even though you will have a good time, it is stressful whilst you are getting the hang of things.  One thing I found really useful was a pair of scissors, as everything we took was new and needed to be opened, and as has already been said make a list of everything to take.

Take a couple of lengths of wood to put under the wheels to help you level the van, and dont like some think use the "steadies" to level the van.

Katie - what type of caravan are you getting?

Our first trip out with ours was to a site only about 5 miles away from home so that we could pop home if we forgot anything - and OH did have to pop home twice!! But we had a wonderful time, and the awning was put up without a near divorce! We have had many other happy trips since and we usually forget something, although we have a check list, but we either manage without or buy another!

Enjoy your caravan and I'm sure you will have many happy holidays in it. Oh and don't forget the wine/beer!!

You missed rule 2.1.34.5

On the first occasion that a member attempts put up an awning it is the members duty to make sure that everyone else on the site has a good view of your efforts so as to provide the afternoons site entertainment.

When I first arrived on site ( 26th May 1992 ) I forgot to unhook the breakaway cable, the brake came on with extra force, the cable broke and made an almighty clang. It took me most of the afternoon to get it to fit back on. Fortunately there was another couple there also new to the business, the first thing they did was to try to fill the hot water tank but had not checked that the shower in the bathroom was not turned on, as a result everything they pulled out of the bathroom was soaked and it took them three Aquarolls to discover the problem. Then they tried to put up their awning and after watching their efforts I swore I would never ever buy an awning. Needless to say I bought an awning 4 months later.

Enjoy you van we do.

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Hi,

Mrs UM refers to the awning as "an argument in a bag"!
