We are thinking about selling out tent and buying a caravan??? Can anyone on advise me what to look for when buying a caravan? Also what size car engine would you recommend to tow a caravan?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Debbie
I think the tourans have quite a good reputation for towing, you may want to check that out before changing the car if there is no need, you would have more to put towards the caravan!
Good luck, the main bugbear with older vans is to look out for damp. Hope that helps plus there is always plenty of people on here ready to offer help
You may want to try putting a post up in the towcar section and use the subject VW Touran

Hi, we just bought a 10 year old swift classic corvette 4 berth. We got it in december to get the best deal which was £4k including 3 month warranty, £800 worth of new awning and £300 of starter pack. It is also really light 1000kgs. We have a touran 2.0 litre 140bhp. It tows it really well but have only done a short journey so far. Even with the caravan fully loaded it will still be below the 85% guidance rule.
Thanks everyone for your replies so far, we will check out the advice you have given us. Has anyone else on here done the same gone from tenting to caravaning if so which do you perfer?
we have but our first weekend away isn't until the first bank holiday in May. Having got everything ready though I think it will be less streesful setting up the caravan than a tent!

We are thinking this aswell, is it as stressful as setting up your tent also do you have more room in the car on your journeys???
We usually have an EHU so we hook up, level caravan, put kettle on (we take some drinking water with us) make a cup of tea sometimes we even leave the caravan attached to the car and have tea first. We then put the awning up and as it is a full awning usually takes about 30 mins plus pegging.
I think the majority of caravnners on here have been tenting first of all, And jujst worked up, we still have our tent and use it occasionally however the caravan is a lot easier. Especially for quick weekends and winter touring

We had a tt to begin with, had one week away in it and then a weekend. We loved being in it but it needed a new canvas so we looked into buying a new tent but having had the space of the tt we would have needed a huge tent. So we got a 2 berth caravan to see if we would like it and loved it and then got a 6 berth caravan which is lovely. It has its problems (it is 17 years old) so we have talked about getting a tent again or a new caravan. I like the look of the Maryland as we would fit in it but whether it would fit on a pitch or not is something i'd have to research. We all love the Ranger 540 or Bretangne both of which have the 3 bunks. Don't know what we will end up with but i'm loving researching both lol...
We were "never getting a caravan", according to my tent mad husband. He now loves our 1995 Swift Challenger 530SE.
We have had it about a year now, with no problems. The comfort is immeasurably better than a tent, especially with kids, who just treat it as a second home.Everything is already in the cupboards and even though we have to set the beds up, it only takes minutes and it is done in the warmth.
Even when we went on long journeys, we stopped at service stations and ate our picnic in the comfort of the caravan. You cannot do that with a tent.
We spent the New Year in Scotland.Unaffected by sub zero temperatures.
Caravans open up camping for every season, and become a movable holiday home.
