Hi folks,

Doe sanyone have a generic list of what things weigh that you would normally load up your caravan with, e.g.

battery, awning (average size) traditional and lightweight, water and waste carriers, gas bottle (normal and lightweight), average set of pots n pans / crockery, duvets / pillows, towels and an average set of clothes for two adults and 1 teenager

and anything I have missed off .....

Although I know why you are asking, its not simply a case of what it weighs, more how you store it (providing of course you dont go over the manufacturer's maximum load).

Like in the old physics classes, weight mass is distributed on where from a fulcrum (or see saw) the weight is. As you may know, the most overlooked part of a van is the nose weight, people happily shove the stuff in the van, without thing of nose weights. The times we have all seen a car with its exhaust scraping the road or a car with its back end risen in the air, pulling the shocks apart amazes me. Both are very dangerous.

Practice loading and get the nose weight right. Invest in a gauge if it hasnt got one built in. I have always gone for about 55-60 kgs nose weight but this all depends on your tow ball and vehicle. There is a 7% rule but ive never looked at it. I have always - particularly when I had a normal saloon - looked at how the car appears when getting the best load. It should be flat with no rises either end. Again 55-60kgs seems to be about right.

Nose weight can make a lot of difference so make sure you look into it. Even if you have a heavy awning, where you put it is more important not how much it weighs.

Once I got the nose weight correct I laminated a list of what has to go where and stuck them under the lockers and placed them in wardrobe and drawers etc.

By doing this I manage to keep the nose weight correct each time

We actually weighed all our items and wrote it out on a list for future reference. Takes some time but worthwhile to have accurate weights of your own stuff.
