I just wondered how you check your tyre pressure in your caravan tyres, have you got as portable one that you use, as it's not always easy using pressure in the garages when your towing, and is there any you would or wouldn't recommend.

As we need to check ours before we use it next week, it would have been standing for several months so quite expecting that the pressure will need topping up.

We will need to this this at our storage site and we have no access to electricity.

Thanks

We have a single barrel foot pump from Halfords with a guage (got it a couple of weeks ago for less than £7!!!).

A single barrel one is light and easy to carry in the van, but it takes a lot of pumping to get to the 52PSi that our van requires!!  I was only adding 8PSi and it took what seemed like an age.

its best to check the gauges on foot pumps/12V compressors, as they are frequently wrong, if a decent tyre gauge costs £8-10 how can one on a £7 foot pump be wrong, my foot pump reads about 5psi over what the pressure actually is, the one on my 12V compressor jobbie is more inaccurate the higher the pressure.

I have a 12V compressor with digital readout, but to double check I use an analogue guage like this.....

Tyre Pressure Gauges

It's essential that your vehicle's tyres are inflated correctly - but which is the best gauge to help you do so? We test 12

April 2006

Want to cut your fuel bills? One of the quickest and easiest ways is to make sure your tyres are properly inflated. Running them at only 3psi (pounds per square inch) below the correct pressure can throw fuel economy out by one per cent. This may not sound a lot, but it all adds up, as well as leading to premature tyre wear. A pressure gauge costs only a few pounds and is a sound investment for any motorist.

But which model should you go for? We put 12 of the best to the test in order to find out.

Verdict

Before starting, we were convinced that a digital gauge would end up taking the plaudits in this test. So it was a pleasant surprise when the Race X Professional put in such an impressive performance. This one took the top spot because it has bar and psi readings as well as a clear layout, and was accurate in its measurements. Halfords' consistent Digital Gauge finished a close second, while the Accutire Mechanic's Digital Gauge came third thanks to its large and clear display.

Thank you everyone for your valued advise, we have an almost flat battery at the moment, but was just going to go with it as it is, hopefully the journey and hook up should top the battery up, so not sure about the one that runs off the caravan battery, though as they are pretty cheap, perhaps I could buy two,  but thank you and I will go looking to buy later today.

We need a tyre gauge that will go over 65psi. We had a halford digital that was good but eventually (after 4/5 yrs) the battery went and we discovered that it was not a replaceable type!

Can anyone suggest a good one that is not too expensive?

J
