I have a 1994 Bailey Pageant Magenta which i bought last September all seemed ok when I used it last year but appears to have developed a fault which I  cant seem to fathom and would like some expert advice from more experienced caravanners than myself as this is my first foray into caravanning ...............

The problem seems to be that when we use electric hook up there is a buzzing sound which emits from the Carver waterheater control panel and also the TVand the lights seem to dim, the waterheater appears to be failing to ignite as the ignition is persistently trying to light but the amber light flashes on and off whilst running hot water.

All these problems cease when we flick the switch to use the battery as  the power source and everything runs fine on the 240 sockets, electric fire, TV etc

This is the first time we have encountered this problem and have tried to eliminate the obvoius causes ie insufficient gas, new hook up lead, low water etc

Can anybody throw any light (pardon the pun!!!!) on this frustrating problem for me, sorry for my ignorance but we all have to start somewhere - apart from the teething problems we love it !!!!!

Just a thought, but it's not usual to use gas on the water heater when you are hooked up to the leccy, although you can.

Have you taken off the exhaust cowl on the outside of the caravan?

Brisha,

On the outside of the 'van adjacent to the water heater is the exhaust pipe for the gas part of the water heater.

It usually is a white plastic rectangular box sticking out away from the body by an inch or so.

If you want to run the water heater on gas the cover has to come off to allow the exhaust gases to escape otherwise the gas will refuse to light.

Regards

Ah right I get where you're coming from now !!!!!!! but thats not the problem the water heater works fine probably I didnt make myself clear  we have plenty of hot water and the heater ignites fine but the problem seems to be that when we turn on the hot water tap the yellow light flickers, the water pump runs slow and the caravan lights flicker it seems as if there is a drain on the whole electrics, but when we transfer the supply to the caravan battery everything works fine ??????

Seems to me you have got the switches confused. When you turn on to run from the battery it is actually turning on the charger. I think you are running on battery alone when you have problems. Either the battery is flat or it is knackered!!!

Charger or battery fault. Invest in a new battery or borrow a good one from someone to test. If thats not right then your charger is faulty.

However I had a fault like this when my Zig charger unit when faulty. However on the old van the charger switched to 230v when EHU was in and trickle charged the battery - it was in affect a 12v transformer. Nowadays when on EHU the charger jsut charges the battery. If you have one of these then it could be that. Either way, its a battery (my guess) or possibly charger.

I am sure that someone on here can recommend a supplier but I would check first that it is faulty.Could even be a faulty relay.

you wont have a flue cover as it will be a casacade 2 , if it was a truma you are not forced to remove to when on leccy .only when on gas it has to come off

when you say control pannel , is that a built in one the same size as a wall plug socket of is it a all in one unit whick sits proud from the mounting service
