Hi all,

We are about to purchase a Ranger 470/4 caravan and noticed that there was no spare wheel in the front locker. The sales person advised that we would have to buy a spare wheel as one wasn't provided as standard on the 2004 model.

I would be grateful if you could confirm if a spare wheel was included originally and whether one should be included in a second hand purchase from a Bailey dealer.

Its quite possible that it did not come as standard on a 2004 van. Are you in a position to negotiate with the dealer to throw one in with the deal?

With a five year old van i would have thought the previous owners would have had a spare wheel so where has it gone?Are they going to sell you the original one from the van as i have seen this kind of thing done before with things like hitches and awnings.

They say not, £6995 for van, to include:

Pyramid Tuscany Awining with two bedroom annexes and inners and woven groundsheet, battery (still fitted 85Ah), aquaroll, wastemaster, hook up lead, towing mirrors, levelling blocks (2nd hand), step, spare oven shelf and replace tow ball to be compatible with Alko hitch and replacing my calor bottle for a full calor light.

Still not convinced we are getting the best deal, but they wont budge, tried for a hitchlock and spare wheel, which they will only knock 10% off.

Awning has a label on it for £500 if they sell it separate to the van, says he would do it for £350 as part of above deal.

Am I getting a good deal ? First time buyer (so lots of questions).

Only the 2004 Pageant and Senator models came with a spare wheel and carrier fitted as standard . If you'd like the 2004 brochure send me a email and i'll send it to you .

How much do they want for a spare wheel rim? Considering the rim won't cost them anywhere near the price of they'd retail it for, surely he can throw one in on the deal. He knows how much room he has in the deal & he also knows used vans are in strong demand but it's his job to try it on with you.

Why not make a couple of phone calls to other Bailey dealers & ask if they've got a similar age/spec caravan in stock & at what price & warranty. I "think" your 2004 model would now be out of manufacturers warranty & you might be under warranty to the selling dealer. you'd need to confirm that but I believe the 6 year water ingress warranty came in on 2006 vans but I could be wrong.

We've been looking at the Ranger and they don't come as standard in this years model.  The GT60 Ranger comes with one.

Will you be buying new tyre's for it or have new one's been fitted.  If they need replacing maybe you could do a deal with a tyre dealer.

We've decided to not go for it as it was more than we were looking to spend. Thanks for the advice though.

Perhaps we should all say to dealers "no spare wheel - no deal" and then we could change a very ludicrous situation. I would stick out for this because I cannot believe any salesmen is prepared to lose a sale for the price of a spare wheel.

Go for it Martin - there are plenty of other caravans out there.
