Hi There,

We have just received a letter this weekend from our insurers to say where we store our caravan is at Risk of Flooding according to Enviroment Agency and they are therefore cancelling our insurnace on the van unless we move it to another site..On checking the site they gave we are not in the area for flood risk and the river would have to rise 25FT to get over the railway line and past the sub power station to get to the Storage site. Plus we have just renewed our site fees and also been insured 5 months into a brand new year with them. We have been insured with E&L for nearly 3 yrs no problems before. Any one else had this problem with any insurance company

No, but just wait for comments and observations about E & L!

Another good insurance company to try is..........anyone other than E & L.

Good luck.

I assume they are refunding the premium?

Are the site owners insurers listing it as a flood plain now? If not I would ask when did it became an issue and if it has just changed status then I would ask they see the policy through because you may need time to find someone who will cover you for flood.

I have just had a thought, ask them that if you happened to go to a site that was in a flood plain and it flooded, would they cover you.

Waiting to hear back from them re this issue as we have stated that there are not many places to site a caravan near us in Leeds not near a flood risk area as most are along a water course except 1 I know of near the airport and is very expensive.

I have worked in the Insurance industry and know that once refused insurance on any grounds or it has been cancelled they see it as the same risk.Very hard  to get insurance

We went as they came up  at a reasonable cost and have not been outrageous qoutes as per club insurance.

For some insurers it is more a case of how CLOSE you are to the nearest stream/river. Same applies to household insurance.

I would try another insurer - though you do run into difficulty if they ask whether you have been declined insurance in the past - as you rightly stated...

Have you spoken to the owners of the site - if so, what did they say? Presumably other caravan owners are in the same situation?

They are inundated with calls about this but as my husband stated to the lady at E&L if the river has risen enough to flood a train track at a 25ft above it to get to my caravan we are all in stuck as a country unless you are sitting on top of a mountain

You need a decent broker perhaps who can phone around and state your case.  I would certainly try the caravan club too, I never buy based on premium but on the quality of the product and service provided.

I too work in the industry.

Have put the storage site postcode into this website?  http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31656.aspx

If it shows the site aint in a flood risk area I dont see how they can refuse you insurance on flood risk grounds.

We use C&CC insurance as very cheap, & also willing to insure our van - well, it is 20 years old, but in pretty good nick - many other insurers declined due to the age of the van.

Just a thought - is the storage CaSSOA registered - if so, they have deals with insurers for gold rated sites - we got a list from the storage company when we moved in.  Perhaps, given the situation, if it is registered, CaSSOA could be contacted & either advise, or if you're hitting the same issues with several insurers they could step in & try & sort it out for you.

Bringing up baby to be a seasoned caravanner - we bought one to holiday cheaply - working well so far - & caravanners are lovely - helped us on our virgin voyage & our awning!!!

E&L have a bad rep with regard to anything that can be insured by them. be it caravans, dogs, cats or horses etc. They seem to like taking your payments but never want to pay out.Comes to something when ones vet tells you that its not a good insurance scheme and that if the animal is with that company the bill has to be paid by the owner in full so that the owner has to wait repayment rather than the vets waiting for them to payout.

If you have proof you are not in a flood plain make a complaint to the ins ombudsman re this company, dont just accept it or as stated you might be refused by others purely on the grounds of this company termiating your policy.
