HELP. We keep trying to put our awning on our caravan but we are finding it realy hard, we just dont seem to be able to get the tension on the roof poles as they only have like black suckers, these suckers dont stick to the van but just push up against it, and as i am only 4ft 11inch tall i am not much help to my hubby so if anyone has any helpful hints we would be more than thankful.
i symphosise with you in your delema, suggest carry a pair of fold-up kitchen steps with you when you go away, just put pads under feet to stop them sinking in ground in use.
will give you height then to assist hubby better, but try and get the uprights of your awning set first and then work on the roof bars for tension against the van,go round and fine adjust all poles with the sliding adjusters, checking all is level on each side.

Once you have fed the awning round the van how is the best way to start erecting the poles, ( sorry for sounding so thick but if we dont get this sorted soon next time it could end in MURDER)
I always start by first laying out the poles on the ground in roughly the place they will go once the awning is up, then feed the awning around the van making sure its level back & front of van, I use the side rail as a marker, start off with the centre upright pole get this in position on the awning and then connect the centre roof pole to this, now you have a starting point, just continue working from the centre pole along to the first corner and repeat process above, you can adjust height and tension the poles afterwoods, we use the awning step too for attaching the roof poles if you are still struggling with tensioning the poles towsure do a pole tensioner, never used one so can't comment - hope this helps, remember its part of the fun getting the awning up. mind you don't tell her indoors I just said that!
I start from one end - get the leg & roof pole together and roughly the right length, then one of you hold that leg while the other moves on to the middle poles - once they are up the other end is a doddle. Unless it's a very short van in which case do the two ends first.
You can buy a tool which will help you with tensioning the poles:
The suckers don't "suck" and hold on to the caravan side - it's just the tension that keeps the roof poles in place. The suckers just protect the caravan.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
I go along with Steve. Basically, once you get used to the initial method for assembly, the speed and ease will come with practice.
I bought one of those tensioners a few years ago, when I had an arm injury. It has rubber grips and works on a lever principle. Frankly, I found it to be of very little use; I reverted to using both hands and shouting "Ouch!"
use different coloured insulating tape on the poles that fit together at each joint, just a couple of turns next to the ends that meet, makes life a lot easier,no arguments , then, bottle out ,corkscrew at ready, have a laugh.relax!!!
my wife helps all the time, otherwise she wouldn't get her drink made for her!!!!!
I couldn't believe how complicated an awning could be until I tried to erect it. Having had an 8 man tent before the caravan, I thought it would be a breeze! Very naive of me! Also, my parents had used it before me and left the doors in so it was also really awkward to try and maneuver it. The first time we didn't line it up straight on the van and ended up with miles too much at the front, and it took a few goes (and help from some friendly caravanners) to get it right. We always start from the middle now and work outwards, still have the rows, especially when it's windy, but that's half the fun (in hindsight anyway!). The tensioning takes a bit of skill, one that I still haven't quite mastered. Have ended up with a small swimming pool hanging down from the roof before now, but I think each time we put it up now, it does get a little better (looks more like everyone elses anyway!)
I did write in permanent marker pen on all the poles though so there was no confusion about what goes where.
It certainly does help if the walls and front are removed or at least rolled up when putting up an awning. And practice does make perfect. The more you put it up the quicker it gets.
I'm not gonna be much use, but I just can't stop laughing after reading through this thread. On a serious note after putting your awning up a couple of times you will wonder what all the arguments were about.
Good luck with it
We thread the awning through the rail. then moisten the suckers and press onto caravan sides. Continue with the centre leg and roof poles (all marked with colour codes tape) then do the sides. We have to hop up and down on the caravan steps as well. Peg out and then to get best tension possible we use the Awning Companion from Towsure. £24,95. One of our best buys.IMO It works a treat and saves OH getting het up.
