Hi Everyone,

We are from Australia and just retired where people like us a called "gray haired nomads" because we like to travel around. We would like to buy a car and caravan in the UK and tour the UK and Europe all year round for about 2-3 years or more. Were not sure of the best way to go about this and would like to get advice from other real people in the UK doing the same thing.

Things like the best caravan, car (4WD etc) and lots more. If you think you can help us we would love to hear from you.

What sort of budget and what sort of layout are you thinking of. Given that you intend to stay for some time you might want to be here for a few weeks looking round. I tow with a 4X4 but they are not everyones cup of tea but at least you have a better choice of vans in terms of weight. The downside is perhaps economy. Have a look at ebay.co.uk which will give you a guide as to what prices are being achieved for secondhand privately sold cars. You might also want to check that you can stay in Europe for that long interms of visa's etc. When are you thinking of arriving?

David

You will need to decide your own priorities but, for a 2-3 year stay, I would certainly be thinking of a fairly large van, probably something with a fixed bed. And for convenience in bad weather, a bathroom with a separate shower.

Having all your own facilities will also allow you to use basic sites and save on site fees

To tow such a van, which will weigh 1600-1900 kg you will need a heavy car, so i think you are looking at a 4 x 4.

Now we are retired, we do 2 longish trips each year, spending about 20 weeks away in total. The above is the set-up we have and we find it very comfortable, we are well past "roughing it"!

Take a look at the manufacturers' websites...Bailey, Swift Group, Coachman, Explorer Group....that will give you an idea of the layouts that are available, and prices.

You can also get names of vans in particular layouts on caravanfinder.

For a guide to used prices look at caravanpriceguide. Also look at prices on sites such as Preloved.

A private purchase will be cheaper than a dealer, and may give you more extra equipment.

A good used 4 x 4 can be bought very reasonably these days, most reliable would probably be a Japanese make, also VW, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo (but then I would say that!)

If you dont want to spend a fortune but want something reliable dont bother with a 4x4. A Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall(Holden to you)Vectra with a diesel engine(better for towing) about 3 yrs old will cost about £6000 from a main dealer & have good service all over Europe.

These will tow a medium sized caravan suitable for extended use. A fairly new one might cost you £10,000 but you should get a good one several yrs old for as little as £4000.

If you want a large twin axle caravan then you will need a 4x4, a 3 yr old one might cost £9-10k

As for registration & insurance of car/caravan, this could be a problem as UK insurance companies tend to load premiums for foreign nationals but it should help as you drive on the left in Oz same as here. The continent drives on the right of course. To insure a vehicle you may need a UK adress. Do you have relatives here?

If you want to spend less you could go for a much older car/caravan & still have reasonable reliablity, what is your budget?

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the replys, To answer some questions, we both have duel Aus and UK passports and rellies in the UK, so long term touring would be allowed for us both. We are thinking of coming April 2010. The budget for both car and van would be about 25K GBP or 50K AUD.

We have been looking at Geist vans in Aus and these look a lot better build quality than Aus vans, so we may look for one in the UK.

As for cars, the Kia Sorento looks good as it's cheeper then the Jap or German models.

Thanks again for the replys please keep them coming and keen to get replys also from people who tour long term ie: sites, what do we need in the van / car etc.

For good sites in UK and access to the small 5 van sites, you should consider joining the Caravan Club and/or the Camping and Caravanning Club. Both also have links with sites in Europe and do ferry bookings. The CC books of European sites are also good. Both also offer insurance.

As to equipment.....where to start!

You should get a pump and a hook up lead with your van, you will also need a step, battery, gas bottles (which differ in different countries), water and waste containers, waste pipes, possibly mains water attachment.

Some type of awning.

Bedding and all the usual kitchen and bathroom stuff.

Chemicals for the toilet.

Outside table and chairs.

BBQ.

TV and radio.

Back up heating (small fan heater).

Emergency battery charger.

Spare pump.

Spare EHU cable.

Hitch lock and wheel clamp(s).

You may also need to check how your driving licences will be regarded here. Depending on the entitlements on them, you may or may not be able to tow a larger outfit.

Hi Folks,

Thanks Jennifer and all the other replys, great advice please keep them coming. We travel a lot here in Aus and the internet has become a big part of it for keeping in touch with the kids etc. We use our laptop and have wireless broadband with Telstra the BT net clone. It costs us $100 AUD per paid a month for 6G and the moble phone service is about the same as UK.

What kind of service and price would we pay and who is the best service provider / coverage etc, would we have to get another service provider for the EU ?

PS What is the pump for and what is a EHU cable?

Your Oz mobile phone will work in UK/Europe as it is part of GSM but will of course be expensive to use in UK/Europe. Of course you can get a UK mobile & dongle for your laptop. Main UK mobile operators are O2, Vodaphone, Orange, google for their websites.

If you have no UK adress may only be able to get pay&go(ie topup with token/credit card)Phone & mobile internet charges within the UK are quite reasonable, only 5p-10p per min & often free between mobiles of the same operator & also free minutes. It might be good to get a mobile with the same operator as your UK rellies to keep down costs.

Once you take you UK mobile to Europe you are 'roaming' same as with your Oz mobile but 'roaming' charges with the EU for EU mobiles have been set at 35p/min to make call & 18p/min to recieve calls. Internet 'roaming' charges can be very expensive tho.

If you can get a pay monthly deal in the UK £15 p.m. for sim only on O2 will get you 300mins,600txts + free O2-O2 calls.

You can of course buy pay&go sims in any European countries & it might be worth it if you, say, want to spend the winter in Spain.

EHU cable is what you use to connect the caravan to electricity, one end plugs into the caravan, the other into the site bollard or socket. (Electric Hook Up)

If you plan to stay on a site more than a few days it is good to have electricity as modern vans can soon exhaust a battery.

The space heating, water heating, and fridge can run off both gas and electricity, but you will generally find it more cost effective to use electricity whenever possible, especially in winter. On many sites the cost of a pitch will either include electricity, or make it available for a fixed fee in conjunction with a hardstanding.

The pump is needed to supply water to the taps in the van. Some vans have an on-board pump, often in conjunction with an on-board tank which will double your available water. Other vans use a submersible pump which you drop into your outside water container and plug into the water inlet on the side of the van.

The most popular water containers are the Aquaroll type. These can have a ball valve type thing and hose connected to top up the water automatically on a serviced pitch.

Even with an on-board tank you will still need an Aquaroll to collect the water to pump into your tank. This is done either by using the on-board pump, an outside water uptake hose and a series of valves, or by using a second pump.

Some continental vans use direct filling of an on-board tank, as in a motorhome, but here we are discussing the methods common on UK vans.

All will become clear once you have your caravan!!

Waste water is discharged via a short hose to a container, most common here is the Wastemaster type. This is then emptied at the designated point. On a serviced pitch you can connect direct to a drain, for this you will need up to 6 metres of waste hose.

The Caravan Club have a good website with technical info for those starting out too, it will probably explain all these things better than I have, take a look.

It will also give you an idea on sites.

The Sorento  would be a good choice and by the time you come you should be able to pick up a baragain as its due to be replaced by a new model in 2010. These people sell Geist vans http://www.elitecaravans.co.uk/ I am not sure they agents but I did hear they purchase a lot of Aussie spec vans, how spooky is that as Dame Edna would say! As far mobile internet is concerned its widely available in the UK and quite inexpensive. My Vodafone Mobile Broadband costs me £15 a month for 3GB download allowance. Its also now availble in PAYG form. The problem is that 'roaming' into Europe with  UK mobile broadband can be expensive. An example:- It will cost me £10 a day with a 50MB allowance to use my Vodafone dongle in Europe. The good news is that from mid 2009 all data roaming in Europe should become cheaper as the EU Commissioner  is going to force networks to reduce roaming and text prices so you could be coming just at the right time!

Hi Folks,

Thanks again for the great advice, it's good to get real advice form people, I checked out the web link http://www.elitecaravans.co.uk/ that David from Milton Keynes sent about the Geists and it seems that the prices are cheep at this dealer. I did not know the Sorento was being replaced in 2010 so we should be able to get a good deal on an old model.

£15 a month for 3GB for wireless broadband seems OK but I hope David is right about the prices coming down in the EU as the internet / Skype play's a big part in keeping in contact with the kids.

Which phone / internet provider has the best coverage in the UK and which in the EU? In Aus there are lots of providers but Telstra (our BT Net) has the best coverage.
