I get your point gazza, but if it was me in that situation, I would renew the wiring completely so as to have no joint in a wet (immersed?) environment.
Taking on board your method of using sealant, if that was the only viable alternative, I would stagger the actual joints as I already stated and, after the sealant had set, use shrinkwrap sleeving to complete the job.
Not being critical, just offering my approach for anyone who may be interested. I tend to do repairs on the premise of fix and forget.
