Sleeping bags can be a pain to wash, especially the king size ones, but they are used as it is usually quite difficult to get a bottom sheet to stay in place on a bed made up from various cushions wedged together.
The last year we had our Emerald (2007) we had a 3 month trip in Scandinavia, with little opportunity to wash sleeping bags (bag liners and I do not get on well), so we decided to get a duvet instead.
Rather than a bottom sheet I bought a lightweight single duvet and cover, this fitted the made up cushion area almost exactly and stayed in place remarkably well.
Now we have the new van with a "proper" matress, we use an ordinary fitted sheet, and if I could find where I carefully stored that single duvet I would use it as a matress topper.
If you already have sleeping bags then I suppose it makes sense to use them, but for the fixed beds a fitted sheet and duvet like at home makes more sense to me. Easy to change and wash regularly, and easy to get in and out of!
We also have a fixed bed. We have a duck feather filled mattress protector on the mattress then a fitted sheet. We use a 13.5 tog quilt but also have another spare incase it is really cold, then we would use them both. I am just back home after spending 10 nights at our seasonal pitch in Scotland. My husband was back to work so it was just my daughter & I in the caravan. I slept in the fixed bed & she was in the front seating area made into a double and I never had a full nights sleep cos I was freezing!!! I think it is the large empty storage space under the bed thats the problem. Its accessable through a hatch on the outside of the caravan. Its also got a vent. I think its making it draughty.
'bigbloomer' i use to have that problem of the cold in our old van as i was the one sleeping on the inside, i use to put a blanket all the way down the side t stop the draught annd cold coming in . it worked.
We have a big king size quilt, and during the day i cover it over with a old blanket so the dogs can lay out and snore away all day!!
So i am off to bed now and snuggle up in the bed , it wont be long before the quilt is kicked off too hot!! enjoying our holiday and comfy bed, better than the one at home !!!
The fixed bed on our Bailey has a big storage area under with additional access also from an outside locker door. Never been too cold though. Last week I was lovely and warn snuggled under my duvet - A duvet that I use in summer also! Mattress is very good, and van has never been really cold. In fact we've NEVER had to use the heating. Our season ends in October and starts again in March, so don't do winter trips, but even so, its often freezing cold outside and lovely and warm inside.
Well I think I might have just found the answer to my problem of being cold last week. I have been to the docs and have been told I've got the shingles. I might just have been under the weather. I have now came out in scabby blisters on my chin.
