weve had an old folding camper for a year and have decided we would like to try a caravan but dont have much spare cash and to be honest probably wouldnt spend alot on a first caravan with 3 kids anyway.where do people generally look for caravans been to a few dealers locally but dont have many in our price range (up to £2000 certainly not 5 berth.been looking on ebay and theres a few but none really suitable locally,by the time i could arrange to view they seem to have sold. and i think im asking for trouble to buy unseen.. im in mansfield notts by the way. we looked at virtually new 5 berths for £8,000 and yet the ones for £4000 are 15 years old doesnt seem to add up to me.is it just the time of year?

regards martin

You are very right not to want to buy a van unseen!  There are 5 berth vans about in your price range but you may end up having to travel.  I was really lucky and got my 5 berth van (1992 model) this time last year off eBay (for a bit less than your budget) and even more lucky it was only half hours drive away - having travelled miles and miles looking at more vans than I care to remember!

Do look through UKCS for advice on what to look for when viewing a van and, if you haven't got one, invest in a damp meter.  If you go to look at a van and the seller does'nt like you wandering about with a damp meter just wonder why!

Try 'googling' caravan adverts and you'll soon find advert sites.  I found this quite a good site as it allows you to ask it to search for certain models, age, price and also distance you are prepared to travel - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/CARAVANS/caravans.jsp.  We viewed several vans through this site and there seems quite a choice.

Good luck with your search and be careful!

Jazzycats.

Hi Martin some caravan places eg Lowdham leisureworld dont stock anything under about 4K. All their cheaper PX go off to other places but I have seen cheaper caravans in Kimberley Caravans. If you go to a dealers ask to see their report on the caravan.

Happy hunting

Robin

Try putting a 'Wanted' advert up in your local supermarket.  A friend of mine was looking for a caravan, and had three replies (all genuine, from people who were giving up because of age or other reasons), saw two really good vans and got a bargain too, complete with all the necessary bits and bobs.

Martin

try A & H CARAVAN SALES MANSFIELD 07828 335 395 (Howard) located on the small industrial estate behind the Bold Forrester. He normally sells on ebay, but he has only got 3 listed at the mo, but could have something on the way. I got my van off him last year, and so far so good.
