My current van has an alko hitch for which I have the appropriate towball on my car.I may be required to tow my brother in laws caravan which has the older hitch. My question is ,will I need to change the towball.

hi if it as not got a alko tow hitch it will have grease on the tow ball i have been told to clean it with petrol to get it clean

No dont clean it with petrol as petrol is still an oil.
The best thing to clean it with is some Meths, the purple stuff and NOT Turps.

I have seen people put a plastic bag over the ball when towing a greased hitch to keep it clean. Whilst it will keep the worst off, I would still give it a wipe over with a spirit based cleaner afterwards to be sure. (Paint thinner, acetone, brake cleaner etc...)
