I'm hoping to come to the UK this Summer buy a caravan, hire a tow car and tour for three months. I'll then store the caravan and do the same thing again for the subsequent years. I believe that I've found a reasonable tow car hiring company.

Do you know any non-UK residents who have done this? I know that non-EU residents can't register or insure motor cars but I don't believe those laws apply to caravans.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Caravans do not legally have to be insured on their own ..as  the towing vehicles insurance will cover the caravan for third party insurance, as long as the towcar hire people know you are going to tow a trailer /touring caravan.....that may be your only drawback ..but i can't forsee any problems as long as your driving license is in order to tow a caravan in this country....search for driving licence to tow on these forums .  http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=20&TopicID=124277&PagePosition=1  .any more questions just ask ..we all say the only silly question is the one that is not asked ..and lastly ..welcome to the forum

Thanks clanjones.

If I read the links properly, it looks like I can tow a combined MAM of 3.5 metric tons which should suit me fine. Now, I only need to find an insurance company that will cover the caravan for my own protection as opposed to it being a legal requirement.

 try here for insurance    http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=48.

but my advice is find secure insurance approved storage first ...they will be thin on the ground this and next year as everyone and their uncle seems to have purchased a caravan this year because of the reccession ..now they have become "fashionable"

My recommendation would be to contact the Caravan Club - they have overseas membership options (we had one for several years) and may be able to help you out insurance wise. The link to the CC website if you don't know it is:

Hi and Welcome to UKCS.

ope you don't mind me asking but why aren't you hiring a motorhome?  This is just my opinion and i haven't actually researched it but wouldn't it be cheaper to hire a motorhome each year than hiring a car and buying a caravan that won't be cheap to buy, store and keep running.

We are a lovely friendly country and i'm sure that you will have a great time but don't forget to bring wellies and a good waterproof coat lol

Jeannie

Thanks Jan.

Actually, I have already become a member of both the Caravan Club and the Caravan and Camping Club. The Caravan Club makes some of its services unavailable to overseas members among them insurance. I'm not sure about the C&C Club. I'll check. Still, you're right. I should be asking my questions of the clubs.

I'll do that and report back here.

No problem, Jeannie.

I'll ask you how many days per year you use your caravan or whatever you have? If it is fewer than 90 days, would it be cheaper for you to hire one each time?

I've done the math. Hiring for a few weeks makes sense but when it gets into months it should be cheaper to own. In years past when non-EU residents could buy motor vehicles, I bought a VW campervan and toured Europe selling it afterward. That can still be done through arrangements in which an EU company holds title and either buys it back or sells it for you afterward but the loss is substantial.

I believe I've found a company that will allow me to hire a tow vehicle for less than I probably would lose by buying and selling one. Next year, my nephew will be studying in the UK and I may buy a car in his name at that time.

Another issue is my height. I'm 6'5" and don't fit comfortably into most caravans. Buying, I hope, will allow me to find one that suits me better. Also, the whole thing is a bit of an adventure.

Of course time will tell. I'm sure there is a very long list of things that I haven't considered.

Still, I'm surprised that I haven't yet found another non-EU resident who has done this already. There are many who buy & sell motorhomes as I described above and there are many from the EU that make trips in North America this way. I wouldn't think it should be hard to find another with thoughts similar to mine. I'd feel better if I found someone who had already jumped through all the hoops.

Any chance of the name of the company thats hiring you a vehicle to tow with?

I tried to find one as a back up plan incase I didn't get my car back on the road in time for our easter break and couldn't get one from anywhere. Not even the national chains or local plant hire firms did them or could recomend anyone.Internet searches were useless and the odd ones I did find details for came up blank when I tried to get a quote.I was told it was an insurance issue.

HirePower is one and SVH is another. I found these on another caravan forum.

Sixt also hires out tow vehicles and they may have some at their locations closer to you.

Her's the government pages for people whose licence was issued in another country. I followed the link that a Canadian national would and got:
Quote: Driving licences issued in any other country
  • you can drive any small vehicle eg cars and or motorcycles, shown on your driving licence, for a period of 12 months from the date that you last entered the country, as long as it remains full and valid
  • you can only drive larger vehicles eg lorries and buses, shown on your licence, that have been registered outside of GB which you have driven into the country

So, for the three or four months each year you want to use the rig, if the rig meets category B (see below) then you have no problem. However, if the rig does not meet category B I suspect you would need to ask DVLA since it's wouldn't be driveable on a "standard" car licence. Unfortunately, DVLA are unreliable IME and unlikely to give a straight answer.

However, if you hired your towcar from another EU country you could legally drive it UK in combination with any trailer that your Canadian licence permits provided it doesn't fall foul of the Construction and Use regulations of the country in which you hired the towcar.

HTH,

Geoff

---
Category B covers cars and light goods vehicles with a MAM (GVW) not exceeding 3,500 kg solo or in combination with a trailer the MAM of which does not exceed 750 kg. Also covered are other combinations of a vehicle in category B with a trailer the MAM of which does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle and where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg.
