hi all,

maybe a silly question, (me being docile again), but why is it that to empty waste water at many campsites you have to lift the (heavy) container up onto something (sometimes fairly high) and often balance it, to empty it out, when a nice hole in the floor would do the job very nicely.

Please say it isn't just me

Andy

Its not just you Andy. I don't know why they do that.  Being the "weaker" gender I sometimes have trouble lifting the waste container up.  Usually end up emptying it when only half full, just so as I can lift it up. Thankfully it is usually my OH who takes care of that department, but sometimes I am there with the kids on my own.  Just love fully serviced pitches

Not a silly questin Andy, perhaps when we come across sites that have 'plinths' for the waste water we should suggest an easier way of doing things to the site owners.

A drain at ground level is far more acceptable for both campers and caravanners. Especially for those who use wastemaster or aquaroll type containers.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.i was thinking about this last week when i was emptying mine,i can only assume it is to catch the waste water and stop it from running onto the ground all around the drain.i have designed a third wheel for mine.ie. it has been fitted with a wheel onto the handle and a strong cord to pull it along to the drain.this may help some who have little strength in there hands or arms.our grandchild old 5 years can pull it full of water by himself that is how easy it is.pictures if required.still to lift it though to empty.

A very good question. A simple grid type drain would be much better.

Another improvement would be to put the water taps at a height that you could just put the barrel under and fill from the tap instead of needing a filling hose for every different type of tap fitting.

That makes sense too, save carrying two or three different hose adaptors. One of the sites we visit regularly has hoses on all the standpipes, makes life so much easier and no matter what size of tank you have it is always left on the floor to fill!

I think the reason the CC sites don't allow this is the "possibility" of the hose getting contaminated e.g. by being used to flush out grey water containers (or unthinkable though it may be, - the cassette toilet!)  Some people would do anything.

Anyway you can see the potential for spreading germans.

I agree though a short hose on the fresh water tap is very handy and brick height enclosures for waste water drains are a pain in the bum.  While we're at it, a waste water drain hole on each pitch wouldn't be rocket science either.

I agree lets not spread any more germans than necessary When I looked into the possibility of opening a CL there was an example of a water supply from the CC showing how to comply with water regs regarding possible back filling.(water returning back into the supply tap) It was a simple arrangement of a tap then a downspout pipe bracket which held a small funnel all set at a height that allowed a small clearance to a water container.Ideal, barrel stays on the floor,no need for multi adapters and no chance of contamination.I do have a flexable fitting supplied with the water barrel but it is pretty useless as it tends to come apart under pressure.

The only problem with providing a drain at each pitch is the cost of the drainage pipe and fittings. Its very expensive and you need lots of it to go any distance.

It seems all the CC club sites I have used all have the low grey waste water drain with a grid unless I have been very lucky. We use a childs toy to fill our Aqua roll and it fits every tap we have ever come across. It is one of those corragated tube things that they swing around there head to make it whistle. We then just have a heavy elastic band to hang it on the tap as it has a built in funnel arrrangment on one end of the tube. We have found these as cheap as 50 Pence at pound stores and the like.

Another simple idea for filling aquarolls is to have a piece of 1.5" rigid plastic waste pipe. this just slots onto the tap without the need for a piece of hose and lots of different fittings. I think the main reason why sites dont have a length of hose attached to the tap is that people will steal them.

I was about to mention this solution also. However, mine has two small holes drilled at the top through which I've threaded a draw-string than came with one of those nets used with some detergent tablets.

To use, I drop the bottom of the tube into the Aquaroll, place the top over the tap spout, loop the draw-string around the tap, then tighten to hold it in place. When you turn on the water, there's only one place it can go and there's no pressure to blow the hose off the tap.

If you don't use detergent tablets that come with a net, you could buy some suitable cord and a spring-toggle for a quid or so from your local haberdashery.

HTH,

Geoff
