In my ongoing hunt for a first caravan i have seen a number of Burstner caravans (my parents have a Burstner motorhome) and they seem really good quality but other than the fact that the door is on the wrong side is there any reason they are cheap?

I have checked A Burstner Ventana(sp?) and this seems to be towed by my car perfect.....

Any hints, tips or horror stories?

Also on a more "dumb" note what does NR mean in front of an awning description?

We have a Burstner Motorhome, and they are certainly not cheap

Never had any problems with the door on the other side just have to think about pitches a bit more.  The door is not on the wrong side if you travel in Europe

Hope you enjoy your new caravan whatever you choose

NR is the make of the awning. Google NR awnings and you will find their website.

If the door is on the Continental side then that could be the reason why they appear good value as well as the fact that in the UK its obviously not as well know as the home grown makes. If you can live with that you could have a real bargain as like most German vans they are well made.

Should of said if you are ordring a new one make sure that the price will not change with the euro rate.  Our van went up by 12k 3 weeks after we bought it.

Have owned our Burstner Belcanto since 2007 having owned British made vans up till then.

The "old chestnut" door on the wrong side has not proved to be a problem at all!

The build quality is definately far superior to our previous vans

Our van is a fixed island bed but might not be to everyones taste as the bed is at the front of the van and the lounge area at the rear.

The only "downside" I would put forward is as from this year Burstner have stopped selling vans in the UK  and are only selling motorhomes. Apparently they will revue this in the future.

Any hints, tips or horror stories?

I bought a UK layout Burstner S500TS, fixed bed, single axle 4 berth, from MG Caravans in Todmorden new in Feb 2006 (they stopped making them in 2007, but MGCaravans may have a recent used one in stock).  It's been perfect from new - not one single fault.

Things to watch:

* The S500TS has a 1500kg MTPLM - so you need a hefty towcar.  Others in the range are heavier - a 2.3m  wide (hence legal in the UK) twin axle at 2000kg, for example)

* With a battery fitted, the spare wheel and two full 6kg cylinders in the front, noseweight is about 100kg.

* In common with many vans, there's about 100mA of leakage drawn from the battery with everything switched off - so fit a battery isolator.

* The amplified Teleco TV aerial works no better than any flying saucer aerial type - so consider getting a Sky digibox and dish.

Would I buy one again?  I don't expect to need to  - but I'd definitely recommend them to anyone else.  I'm not a fan of continental layout vans, though, so if I couldn't get a UK layout Burstner I'd have to look elsewhere - Hymer or Geist maybe.

Best of luck
Andrew

I wouldn't buy anything other than a German van now.  We recently bought a Geist and I'm so pleased with the quality of the fittings etc.  We did look at a Burstner and that was also very good but we had a very good deal with the Geist.

We can definately agree with this post, would be really hard pushed to go back to a British van as the quality is not so good.
We have had NO issues with door on wrong side or being taken for a traveller! Typical anti European van comments again!

Only real downside is they are heavy but then so are a lot of new vans.
Our layout is fixed double & fixed bunks which is fairly unusual but what we wanted.
The Germans also don't seem to do the dreaded knee rolls either another benefit.
Good luck with your search.

We have been very tempted by either a hymer or a geist next time, The only downside is the price,

Its a shame  burstner have stopped making them for the UK or they would be on our list to look at too

The only other one we are tempted with is the Adria Altea as they seem good value and do the perfect layout for us.

We love our swift but would not buy another brittish van, unless they start to match the Germans.
