Hi,
As a local Cumbrian, i'd travel on the A591 (Ambleside-Grasmere beyond) early or later on due to heavy traffic. Avoid 10am-4pm at least. Ambleside gets snarled up with shoppers, walkers, dithering in the street, jostling for parking and the outer road with cyclists. (We have jay walking tourists who wander in the main road too, espescially around the Bridge House). Dunmail Raise is awkward but take it easy on the other side as it bends and twists, and side winds are nasty dropping into Keswick.
Hawkshead is a difficult road, narrow and best left to more experienced drivers, beware the bus drivers, they know the road like the back of their hand, they scare some people with thier confidence.
If you have any questions about the Lakes, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Coniston areas just ask!
Have fun x
