Just sold my old porch awning to help towards the cost of a "new to us" Isabella full awning courtesy of fleabay. Traveled 110 miles to collect only to find my "as new condition" awning was moldy with permanent damp damage to some of the windows. Needless to say i never paid. To be fair to the seller, he was mortified and offered to pay for my fuel.
If I have learned anything from this, it is to ring the seller and get them to double check the condition before setting off.
Still looking forward to an awningless wedding anniversary getaway without the kids though.

Ejoy your child-less wedding anniversary  ! & good luck awning hunting! We are are also after an Isabella full awning, but being female i'm fussy on wot i want, & we're thinking about getting a cheaper brand but new awning. Good luck Nightoff.

Good old Ebay. Two years ago I won a bid for a caravan costing just over £4000. Paid for it by cheque, waited for the cheque to clear and drove from Berkshire to York to collect it. The owner was not around, but collected the keys from someone he knew, walked up to the caravan and realised that something was not quite right. It had external damage, a springy floor and signs of damp - by now it was too late. We towed it home, tried to phone him for about two months but never any reply and rapidly realised we were ripped right off. We spent £2000 to repair everything and have a full service. The caravan is lovely now but we ended up paying well over the odds for it. I guess we all learn from our mistakes. I won't be doing that again. I get so cross every time I think about it.

At least the seller was prepared to compensate you - and I suppose it's difficult if you put an awning away whilst it's damp, but surely he should have checked the condition before listing it.

Ebay is fine for stuff you know the value of, but I don't understand why someone spending £4,000 on a caravan would buy 'unseen'.  If it's worth spending all that money then isn't it also worth the cost of the fuel to have a look first?

I'd never part with £4k for something I haven't seen, no wonder people get ripped off if they are prepared to do that.

Keep looking, the right awning will come up sooner or later.

Absolutley,

Ebay is a great way to buy things...but it is not John Lewis!

You need to have your wits about you, but in my experience (over 200 deals) I have only met genuine decent folk and have never had a problem. Like Ali says, an item that can have varying characteristics needs to be viewed, or bought at the right price.

A couple of weeks ago I bid and won a model plane for £42. The photograph and discription was poor, it was obvious the seller knew nothing and could not even answer my questions in an acceptable manner.

I took a chance and came home with a very well made model that could be sold tomorrow for £120.

I have bought the occasional pup though but thankfully only lost a few quid.

Same here, we got a brand new Pyramid Tuscany for £100 from Ebay, the owner had presumed his boss would let him tow a caravan with his firms car and bought the caravan and awning brand new, only to be told the bad news on monday morning.

We also have bought our trailer tent, and 2 caravans and porch awning from Ebay but viewed them before parting with the cash, but all were better than the photos and descriptions.

At least the seller did the right thing when he realised it had been damaged.

Cheers

Paul

Personally I do not mess around with anything over £100 on ebay.  Anything significant I perfer the good old classified or online non auction listings.

So far so good with ebay. But I am careful and don't part with large amounts before seeing the goods.

With eBay you don't know (or know little) about who you are dealing with, so the onus is on you to do the checking or take a chance. I bought my van on eBay and consider it was good value and there have been no hidden surprises. But went and viewed and had a chat will the seller at his home first.

if you pay cash on collection , ie for cars, caravans , or any type of large item ,Ebay is just like any classified ad ,in any local paper , you go you look if it is not as described you walk away , classified ads can tell lies about condition of items just like any type of advert

No way would I have paid all that money up front on an item I had not viewed...I would have paid a small deposit thru Paypal and the rest on collection (If it was OK)...This way the seller had to be there to collect his cash......Pleased to see you are happy with the van now though.

I acknowledge i had a lucky escape this time. I only lost time. It could have been worse if I paid by paypal prior to collecting.
Good to see some people are finding bargains out there.
I'll just keep on looking.
