We have a Toy poodle 15 yrs old with problems, wee ing being the main one.

He loves holidaying in the caravan and he has never been in kennels. We can cope with all his problems etcept the weeing, otherwise we will have to stop caravaning altogether , has anyone else had this problem, as he is still a much loved one of the family. any advice would be very much appreciated.

Could you take out the carpet and just have lino down and get a cage in the awning for nightime.I would not put my dog in kennels especially at that age.

Hi Robert

When we are home we put paper down in the outhouse at night in case ours has a wee, and when we go away in the caravan we take some of the paper off the floor (that she has not soaked) but has her sent on and put it on the shower room floor in the caravan, so far so good.

You can get absorbent pads for puppies (to put on the floor whilst housetraining) maybe these would work?

I'd go for replacing the carpet with lino or cheap laminate & putting puppy pads down (they're slightly scented to encourage them to use them).  Cleaning accidents with white vinegar helps remove any scent.

I'd also take him out every 20min or so to try to get him to do more outside & perhaps try to restrict the amount he drinks in the evening altho if fed on kibble this would be difficult as they do get very thirsty.

Personally, at 15 I wouldn't recommend crating him if he's not already crate trained - it could be really stressful for him.  We had crying & tantrums crate training our puppies, never mind a golden oldie!

Hope you manage to sort it - it'd be such a shame if he couldn't enjoy his caravanning in his golden time.

Hi,

There is a medicine called Propalyn Syrup that helps this sort of thing. My old Spaniel had this problem and four drops of this in her tea sorted it. She was old and I am sure this  made the last few years of her life more bearable, she used to get quite agitated by her problem because she thought she was doing wrong.

Ask you vet about it.

A BIG crate for a little dog perhaps? I have always used a crate for the car, so my two (Poodle and Chihuahua) are used to it and hop in readily. The one I got from eBay has a side opening door as well as an end opening door and is big enough for a labrador.

When crate training at first It is suggested that the crate is kept in the main living area of your house with the doors kept open and the dog's bedding inside so they get used to it being their space, then gradually get them used to one of the doors being closed and gradually move it to the area it is needed. A command word may help so he knows if you want him to go to the crate. Mine respond to the command "bed".

It may be easier if dogglet can see you when the crate door is closed and have a favourite toy or small treat for when they go in there so they know it's a nice place to be. Once he's happy with it you know that any accidents can be confined to that space, and the throwaway puppy pads that go on the floor of the crate will be warm to lie on and absorbant too. An old towel thrown over the top, tent fashion, will make it even cosier

I got some brilliant stuff from a stall at Crufts for geting rid of dog wee smells, it's called Urine Off (yeah right) but it really works. It's also supposed to stop dogs scent-marking on top of areas that have already been weed on, but if it's just incontinence then it will sort out the pong.

Hope that helps

Wendy

Me again ...i was in Poundland todayand in there they have those training mats not sure how many in a packet but at a £ a go you could have a good stock of them maybe try plenty of newspaper and the pads on top before going to the drastic measures of taking the carpet up or as ive already said the sanity pants

Have you thought of buying a puppy pen and putting it in the awning? They are obtaibable up to 48" high so a poodle wont be able to jump out. We have 2 which we join together so our pup can have the run of the awning in safety
