When we go to France this year,we have family coming to stay with us.They are going to use Lily's bed in the van,so Lily going to sleep in the annexe. She will be 13 but Gazbag says she is too young to sleep in there on her own,and that it's not safe.Any comments please!

I know what you mean, it is a worry, I have thought about doing this in the future when our 4 yr old is older, think I would worry less if there was a couple of them out there rather than just the one - probably end up out there ourselves in the end! lol

Not been caravanning abroad, but our daughter (now 17) has been sleeping in her own tent since she was 13, not even awning annexe. We just don't lock the caravan door so she can get in for the loo. She loves her own space.

You could always rig up one of those panic alarms that have a pin that pulls out to set it off. Fit it to the awning door zipper and if anybody trys to enter it would go off which should frighten any would be whatever you want to call them.

Mine were sleeping outside the awning individually in a pup tent each when they were 9 & 12.
I reckon an awning annexe would be harder for them to escape from.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

Our kids have been sleeping outside in pup tents (1 each as they are a boy and a girl) in our yearly trip to France since they were 4 & 5 they are now 22 & 23. I see no problems as long as you use sensible campsites. Municipal ones are fine

I've been camping literally all my life, before the days of sewn in groundsheets.
For me camping has become more and more safe. At one time before the yob set went of to Spain for a fortnights booze up, they used to go camping, and keep the rest of the campsite awake until the early hours of the morning.
Our kids had pup tents from an early age, and when they became teenagers, often used to pitch at the opposite side of the campsite to us and thoroughly enjoyed it. Never had the slightest problem.
Stick to good quality campsites, either here or abroad.

I worry about 10 year old ds sleeping in the awning. He is a big boy for his age, i try to get one of the dogs to sleep out there with him but even if they don't then they would at least let us know if someone was to have got in to the awning, he sleeps in a tent in the awning so it's not advertised that he sleeps in there like an annex might, all of which reassures me slightly. I don't let him know that i am worried because i don't want him to be fearful. It's a tough one but if your dd is happy to do that then your oh will have to let her. Will she be on a airbed? If she wants to come in at night then there is enough room for her airbed to go on the floor if absolutely necessary, you won't be able to use the toilet though lol.
Good Luck...

Mine are aged 6, 9 and 12 and have been sleeping in the awning for a few years now, like someone else I just left the caravan door open so I could hear them. Saying that we now have a 6 berth and sometimes I wish they were still out in the awning I seemed to sleep better, it was much quieter some how!!!!!
