Discover has decided to close its depot in Cumbria with the loss
of 18 jobs..some of the workforce have been there upto 20 years.

The information found indicates that Barclays Bank have just bought 9.5 million shares in Discover Leisure, possibly reflecting (or to some extent causing) the rise in Discover’s share price, which has more than doubled since the start of the year.  This sounds a lot, but given that the share price is still currently only about 1p, that’s an investment of only about £95,000, which Barclays would presumably consider to be rather small change.  Based on recent published results, Discover remain unprofitable at the moment, but generate lots of turnover.  Presumably, Barclays think they are a viable investment opportunity.  None of this indicates an undue likelihood of imminent collapse of the company, although in the current economic situation, this could probably not be ruled out entirely for a great many businesses.

For financial details of Discover, and some lively internet forum discussion of their merits, see here.

We've heard today that they've closed 3 branches, our local one is Cannock and they have hardly got any stock, they reckon they're clearing stock out for the 2010 range but have got a huge amount of space already, plus the section where they used to have the 2nd hand vans is now empty, they reckon they cant get 2nd hand vans which is rubbish, another local place had loads of them and a huge turnover.

Hi

Discover at Weston Super Mare is similar - A distinct shortage of new and decent second hand caravans.

Most of the new caravans were Swift and Bailey (the complete range).

I'm not sure if they own the new display vans or they belong to the manufacturers.

Back along they were under pressure from the Banks to reduce stock (they had a hell of a lot over the winter).

I understand their new ethos is an agreement with manufacturers to supply them with new vans and motorhomes within a couple of weeks as they get orders.

On the home page of the Discover website the map still shows 16 sites but if you click on it the next page shows a larger map with only 8 sites now shown:

Birtley, Darlington, York, Chorley, Delamere, Cannock, Newport and Weston.

All others appear to have closed or been sold on.

Warrington branch also closed about a month or so ago.

Think we all thought there might have been a problem when the had a big auction of folding campers and vans not so long ago.

It appears that the Caravan Dealerships are following in the Foot Steps of the Dixon Families car dealerships.

Unfortunately, unless their are some managment take-overs more people will be loosing their jobs.

Sounds like the old boom and bust scenario, they did appear to get very big overnight and it looks like the bubble has burst, I just hope there are not to many casualties from it.

just received a phone call from discover at 7pm regarding some warranty work on our van, to be told our local branch at Orpinton Kent has been closed along with the Herne Bay branch, so we wil have to take it to either Weston Super Mare or Cannock (near Birmingham i think) from our home in Kent for this work to be carried out..

That's a very long way when you thought you bought from a "local" dealer. But as I said in earlier post, only 8 outlets left at present.

Assuming your van is the Swift Challenger shown in your profile, you should, in theory, be able to take it to any Swift Group approved workshop.

We bought a Swift Group Ace caravan in 2004 from Lincolnshire and had it serviced thereafter in Somerset, including having warranty work done.

In practice, dealers are a bit reluctant to do service/warranty work on vans they haven't sold.  You might have to sweet-talk your way with the implication that you will buy vans from them in future!!!

I spoken to Cranham Caravans and looks as though they would be willing to carry out warranty work and servicing but not until later in the year. So we can carry on using the caravan throughout this `scorching summer` we are being promised
