Hi Everyone,

Over the last couple of weekends i have had an interesting debate (sometimes verging on arguing) with a couple of caravanning friends, it seems that because we (myself & the wife) have no interest in camping in a farmers field and  using a porta-potty we are somehow not "proper" caravanners. Now my view is when we stay in hotels here or abroad we go to 4* or 5* if we can afford it so why should i not go onto an all singing all dancing delux pitch with my van. To some this seems like snobbery (if you can be a snob in a 10 year old Pageant?), just really want to know your views on this issue, although to be honest we will not change the way we enjoy our caravanning.

Regards,

Granty.

If possible I go to sites that have fully serviced pitches i'm on holiday I want to do as little as possible its about convenience just turn the tap on and you've got your water without worrying about running out and no lugging heavy waste water bottles about.

We use CLs and CSs as much as possible, always with ehu; we have a good washroom in the caravan but have in the past used a porta potti with older caravans, but then chose sites with showers. I don't like paying the inflated prices of some sites.

I always book sites with showers and loos even though our van has a small shower and toilet room. OH says he will use the van as convienient when renting the lager but me i'm for on site facilities. Go with what makes you happy. Its your holiday. And yes when we go to London we stay at the Hilton in Docklands so we like our comfort as well. Doesnt beat the van tho

Its simply a matter of personal choice....If you want to go to a no frills site with a tap in the corner and no electric then that's fine by me....Personally we prefer Club sites with good facilities and clean toilets etc, but I wouldn't try to claim  which is the better.

I like sites with ehu, good toilets and showers, and love it when you have water and drainage.  But I am happy to use the caravan facilities when the site either does not have them or they don't meet my expectations. I am on holiday and want a bit of comfort. One of the things I hated about holidays before having the van was paying for an expensive room to find it was less luxurious or not as clean as my house.

I enjoying cooking outdoors, eating outdoors and walking, watching wildlife but I like a clean kitchen and a clean loo be it the camp site of the van.

I wonder if camping without facilities is inverted snobbery?

A "proper" caravanner? Are you in a touring caravan? If yes, then you're a proper caravanner - simple. I wouldn't extend the description to staying in a static, but there's nowt wrong with that, either.

As the great Alan Whicker once said: "Any fool can be uncomfortable".

We often go on CL sites, but not without showers, toilet and electric. We like the small site feel, but the facilities that it offers. Some may say that this isn't proper caravanning but its each to their own I say.

|We love the quieter sites, just always have EHU, we do occasionally got to fully service pitch sites however we have a good shower in the van and its real hardship to fill the aquaroll

We are currently at a site with facilities in cheddar (last night tonight ) however this morning toilet block was busy so I used shower in the van.

Its miserable outside tonight windy and rainy so will bath baby in the shower tray in the van, without having to struggle with all the stuff to get all the stuff over to parent and child. I would have been just as happy to go to a CL for Bank holiday but we wanted to come back here.

I think its each to their own really, and depends what you want from your break. We personally love the quiter CL's etc however always with EHU! LOL

I like a site with hot showers, toilets and play area/football field.   I also prefer the sites that have a mix of tents and caravans as opposed to just caravan's.  If that makes me a snob or not a proper caravanner then who care's?  I certainly don't.  Each to their own works well for me and i'd hate to be in a (camping) world where we all had the same caravan, though i've ordered the Bailey Ranger 540/6 along with all the masses so will probably find that i am in a world of the same caravan lol

One man's meat is another man's poison. Personally I hate commercial sites. I find them the most unfriendly places on earth. Give me a rally field any day.

If you like commercial sites then that's fine by me. It leaves more spaces on the rally field for me.

I wouldn't condemn anyone for using a serviced pitch any more than I expect to be condemned for rallying.

we usually go to all singing all dancing sites for the kids summer hols, and enjoy a super pitch , but we had an equally enjoyable easter break with 8 of us in a farmers field with no ehu or even toilet block . thoroughly enjoyed it , and would definately do it again, but sticking to haven for the school hols for the kids entertainment.

have to say tho the wild camping experience we just had while fetching our new van over the weekend was some of the most fun ive had in ages ( just oh and me , no kids). took the sofa cushions from the old caravan , made a massive bed in the back of our large minibus, added a bucket for emergency stops lol, and off we went

we do all types, from big commercial sites for the kids (haven mainly) to a feild with a tap, it all depend on what we have planned, for a hiking weekend, there seems little point in paying commercial prices for somwhere to put our head.

For me, it is basically having a home from home. Some people say what is the point in going away if you make it just like home, when you are away. I look at it from the other view, that we are wanting to go somewhere different but be able to stay close by and be comfortable whilst doing it. This weekend, we were up in the dales, we were able to stay for 3 nights, be comfortable, not have to worry about driving home, be able to cook our own meals and basically be self sufficient like at home, but in a different part of the country.Do what suits you and enjoy yourself. Let them sleep on the floor and get wet, walkng to the loo in the night. i am glad to be able to wake up, put the kettle on and have a cuppa in bed in the morning!
