Working on my gates today when a very new looking R/Rover towing a very new looking van pulled up briefly in front of the house but what drew my attention was the fact that a hitch loch was on in fact it was almost certainly an Alko unit or very similar, being new to all this I just wanted to know if this is normal as I have only previously seen them fitted whist the van is static .

We have that hitchlock and have always left it on whilst on the move. The thought of flipping over had never occured so I will think twice before doing that next time!
If the van flipped the van should stay attached whether or not the hitch lock is in situ. The tow ball is locked in place as soon as the hitch lever snaps down and the green is displayed at the button. Hitch lock or not I don't think car and van would part company very easily cos if the van is on its side then the coupling is at almost 90deg. to the towball and would be almost impossible to disengage without righting the van first. If van had parted company then I would think it wasn't properly hitched in the first place or it had a major fault. Mick
True, Mick - but I bet the last thing the emergency services need when they arrive on the scene is to have to ask for the key to hitchlock, no matter what state the van or tow vehicle are in.

I always travel with the hitchlock fitted because of motorway services etc. I normally arrive at them bursting for the loo and haven't time to stop and fit it (it's an age thing).
I also remove the jockey wheel if I'm going abroad or have bikes on the back of the towcar. It's a theft deterrent and the bikes can't foul it. Also ensures it doesn't catch the ramps on the ferry.
I always leave mine on when travelling, as Mick say's if vehicle flipped it will stay on whether hitch lock is on or not, have a look at the banger racing when they race caravans not many come off. As for emergency services in the event of an accident if you flipped and was trapped inside they are not going to right you before they get you out ! Do people leave them off thinking they are going to have an accident everytime they take caravan out !! People nowadays hijack vehicles at traffic lights/ halt signs, who knows what they might take next ?
I would not worry about the emergancy services getting the Alko hitch lock off. A quick pry with a crowbar will pop the lock off anyway. Personally I would not have another one given. Too easy to remove without the key. We always stay in the van at service stations and relax in comfort. That way you don't need to use a hitch lock and saves all the hassle of unlocking and locking.
I was going to buy one just so I can leave it on when travelling so we can stop in the services etc, but after seeing 2! yes 2 caravans on its side on the m4 at different times today, i've thought twice.
