If your dad's illnes demands it, won't they take the car and caravan back to your home, whilst your dad is transported by more suitable means (e.g. ambulance)?  Yorkshire to Cornwall is one heck of a journey for someone just discharged from hospital.

Yes, that is what I am hoping will happen now - originally he didn't think he needed an operation so was hoping to travel with the van, but now the hospital are talking about transporting him.

It's a bit of a nightmare (to say the least!), but I am relieved that the van sounds like it will be taken car of.

The most important thing is that he gets the best possible care, and let's see him get fit, and back to caravanning.  These things do crop up, but you can get them behind you.

Last year when caravanning in France, just before I turned 73, I had a TIA (mini-stroke) at about 10:30 pm on a Saturday night.  Within an hour, I was rushed about 20 miles, put into a scanner, and given whatever treatment I needed.  When it happened, my wife was calling home, and she and the family were going frantic over how to deal with the problem.  Next morning I felt fine, but was kept in for 6 days for tests and continuing treatment.

On the 6th day, I was passed fit by the doctors, and everything came up normal.  They gave me a prescription requiring me to take a  pill and a soluble aspirin-based capsule daily, said I was OK to drive, and to continue our remaining 6 weeks of the holiday.  So we did, and I took the caravan to the south of France and back. The only difference to my life is the medication, and a very watchful OH.

Keep your dad's mind on continuing with his caravanning and planning future trips..

We'll all be interested to hear if the Caravan club & Green flag look after you, from what I've heard they will. A call to the Caravan Club should sort it for you.

What an absolutely awful situation for your family.  I really hope your dad recovers soon.

One thing to consider for the future is this particular incident - it may lead to some insurers refusing to insure - incredibly harsh I know, but given the 'credit crunch', they are looking to save money wherever they can without consideration of previously blemish free insurance - shop around, best by phone, & do the best you can

Just to update you all on the situation....

I and my OH spent 5 days in Scarborough sorting it all out, and getting the caravan ready for transporting etc.  Green Flag came up trumps in the end after a lot of phone calls and a bit of hassle - the caravan and car were safely recovered back to Cornwall on Tuesday.  Which is a load off all our minds. 

My Dad is not so good. He was transferred to the hospice in Scarborough on Monday, and then they organised an ambulance to transfer him down to the hospice near his home in Cornwall yesterday. So at least he is now near his home and friends. I am currently at home (half-way between Scarborough and Truro!), and due to travel down to see him again in the next day or so.

I just want to say a big thank you to all of you who posted on this thread - it was a huge comfort to hear other peoples' experiences and good wishes, and made a lot of difference to how I was feeling.  So thank you all.

I really hope your dad gets better soon, At least his beloved caravan and car have been moved back for you so thats one less thing to worry about
